My town (Millburn,NJ) is basically under water . From downtown south all along Main St. (which is now a 1-4 foot raging river) and bordering Union County is all inundated with water. Many homes/apt buildings/stores have water in them. 1 foot of water on the basement level in my building. Worst flooding in 60+ years here.

yep.. looks like the last batch of heavy stuff is on us now. I am recording 2 inch per hour rates right at this moment

I went down to Freeport again with a friend and saw the biggest storm surge I have ever seen. WE parked and walked down a few block...WE saw people on boogie board and you could see multiple people walking towards us in chest deep water. We asked them how deep in was down a few more blocks....They said they saw multiple mini van completely under water. I have seen coastal flood many times, but never on this scale. I wonder was it was like all the way down in Freeport by the shore. Just amazing stuff from an overall disappointing storm.

Statement as of 9:44 am EDT on August 28, 2011

At 8:42 am EDT this morning the tide level at The Battery reached

9.5 feet MLLW. This is the sixth highest level ever recorded at The

Battery. At 9:06 am a maximum surge of 4.5 feet occurred with this

high tide in combination with the astronomical tide.

Other notable levels reached include the top two of 11.2 feet MLLW

and 10.9 feet MLLW which occurred during the hurricane of September

1821 and hurricane Donna in 1960 respectively... and 9.6 feet MLLW

during the noreaster of December 1992.

There were no hurricane force winds in Egg Harbor either :P I think we have to give up on the notion that these rated speeds correspond to "ground truth"

It made landfall in or very near to my town...I assure you we do not have hurricane force winds...the highest recorded was 69mph last night at 8:40pm in an intense band.

Irene was likely a TS as soon as it exited N.C. yesterday but the NHC kept it a hurricane for public purposes, Irene in general was never really a powerful hurricane, it was barely a major hurricane at one point, it was a large storm though with very low pressures but not what it was forecast to be a few days ago. Hopefully this storm will turn heads in the future and make people realize that they can see hurricanes up here and they are vulnerable, it was also a great test for state officials and a great test to see how the area can evacuate and prepare themselves in the future when a truly devastating storm could really strike.

It was pretty bad but it didn't last long and got swept back out.

BW, didn't you say it was comparable to Donna and Dec. 92?

No I never said that, but the surge was probably a little less since landfall was east of city proper. Winds were more ne until last minute.

Getting some gusts to 70 now in ern mass, but I'm missing it.
