NickD2011
The personal weather stations report more often than the official weather stations. Perhaps that Sayville weather station is near other buildings which would cause a funneling effect and increase the reported wind speed.
A-L-E-X
Something that was pointed out earlier is just because you have a minimal hurricane does not mean anyone will experience those conditions-- the maximum sustained winds are (theoretically, at least) represented by just a point, so it's highly unlikely anyone on the ground would experience that. That's why, in a 75 mph minimal hurricane, our forecast was for 50-70mph sustained winds.

Bobby
Checked surrounding stations and got the same Which stations? Only other station on WU showed a max gust of 62? Am I missing something?
A-L-E-X
Highest official I see is sustained 52mph with gusts to 67mph at LGA at 4:00am. There was a 71 mph from the Moriches, was that considered official? And the 70 mph from the Battery buoy.

Weathergun
There was a 71 mph from the Moriches, was that considered official? And the 70 mph from the Battery buoy. Yes, it's in the LSR and PNS.

A-L-E-X
Yes, it's in the LSR and PNS. Thanks, what was the sustained on the Moriches? I know it was in the 50s somewhere, just dont recall the exact number.
West Point, NY
I knew I wasn't crazy, they just said on ABC7 that the center is over Queens & Nassau. Wherever it is I hope it officially maintains it's Cat 1 strength. They are wrong. They were showing a reporter on channel 7 in Long Beach where they claim the eye was passing over and the guy was still being blown across the boardwalk. 40 mi SSW of NYC moving NNE would bring the center over NYC shortly. The clear spot on the radar is not indicative of the true center. There was a clear twist on GRLEVEL 3 radar which moved up from Belmar to Staten Island and now Manhattan/Hoboken . Winds at JFK were from the EAST so the center is not to their East period

Dsnowx53
I just went to Peter's Clam Bar, which is right near Long Beach...in Island Park. The roads were too flooded to go any further south than that, so we didn't take any chances. I got some insane video. The winds were awesome. The bay nearby had surged and infiltrated the road that was perpendicular to Long Beach.

BethesdaWX
Backside is wild keep in mind, came though the DC are with gusts between 60-70mph on severa Wxbug stations. That should come through you guys I'd think.
RCNYILWX
I used to be the student intern at OKX, I passed the Sayville report along to them on NWSChat. If it's considered plausible, it will be used. The NWS doesn't only use "official" NWS or NOAA maintained obs, we take plenty of mesonet reports that are privately owned. So we'll see.
