Cfa
people from the south (Florida..etc) and north (nyc etc)..have a battle between them on twitter..saying Cat 1 hurricane is a drizzle.. to stop the panic .. like really? are we comparing a Cat 1 on Florida to one on NYC..its not the same. but I guess its normal..I remember one time when Orlando,FL had snow showers ..and they were like the world was ending. Sounds like earlier this week with the earthquake. "A 5.9 isn't serious, it's just a regular Tuesday on the west coast" but when San Fransisco had a smaller earthquake the next day it instantly became a trending topic. People always have something to say.

JSantanaNYC
stupid idea..it's a storm for the politicians and media..not the people..where to I vomit its not stupid! start researching before ! its lower part of the city...which could have the greatest impact on flooding..you know electricity runs under our streets in NYC right? damn.. Quincy
looks like its a deluge near danbury. http://radar.weather...id=OKX&loop=yes heavy rainfall, huge rain drops too. Wish I had a rain gauge, the airport is further SW and barely measured any rain from 10-11...

salbers
I agree and with most big storms like this the hype of wind damage usually under performs but the flooding from surge and copious rains under projected. Still think the winds damage will be enhanced by the very wet grounds of late. Looking like a 4 - 8 ft surge into the harbor. Say for Long Island (Great South Bay), high tide is around 9am and the peak surge might be around 10am lining up with this...
Quincy
let's not forget that Gloria's surge was on the order of 6.9'. This storm is larger and if the timing is near high tide and we have the potential of the center of this storm passing over close to Manhattan, this is bad news...10' storm surge could be very possible. psv88
Say for Long Island (Great South Bay), high tide is around 9am and the peak surge might be around 10am lining up with this... .STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE... IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO DETERMINE THE EXACT HEIGHTS OF COMBINED STORM SURGE AND TIDE WATERS FOR SPECIFIC LOCATIONS WITHIN THE FORECAST AREA TO BE CAUSED BY HURRICANE IRENE. IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE PRECISE SIZE...INTENSITY...TIMING AND TRACK OF THE SYSTEM AS IT APPROACHES THE COAST. BASED ON THE FORECAST TRACK OF IRENE THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR 5 TO 8 FEET OF SURGE IN WESTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND AND NEW YORK HARBOR...WITH 3 TO 6 FT OF SURGE ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE BAYS OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK CITY...PECONIC AND GARDINERS BAYS...AND EASTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND SOME TIME EARLY SUNDAY MORNING INTO EARLY SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THESE TIDAL CONDITIONS WILL BE AGGRAVATED BY ACCOMPANYING LARGE... DESTRUCTIVE...AND LIFE THREATENING WAVES. This will inundate lower manhattan. North shore long island areas...8 feet is a lot to rise. Towns like huntington might be flooded all the way to the village.
MJO812
Looks like it is going to go slightly west of the City or right on the City.
Quincy
I think the current track is the worst possible (further inland would cause more weakening, further east would be less affects along NJ and NYC) It looks like the center tracks right along the NJ coast, an NJ landfall is looking more likely, but the center may not get very far inland at all.
