anyone who's trying to say there are no more tropical characteristics to this storm are clearly flawed in their thinking...this thing is really cranking and it's going to be a very rough go in NJ for the next few hours and then into NYC shortly thereafter...

My rain total so far is nearly 5 inches, with more on the way. The rain earlier was absolutely torrential; some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen. Around 12-12:30 the winds got quite impressive here, and as it was happening I witnessed quite a few transformers blow. A few small branches down already in my yard. Now winds are really picking up again.

A little nervous about the tornado potential, especially since it's nighttime!

Hey guys... It is definitely windy.. Even up here in the burbs

It hasn't really been that bad here, and the rain bands have split us to the SW and NW. It looks as if the models were universally too aggressive with rainfall amounts in Westchester/Rockland; I see heavier amounts occurring over the Catskills/Poconos where rain is training and will be enhanced by elevation and forced ascent on E/SE flow. I haven't noticed any winds over 30mph...Power hasn't come close to flickering.

While the center is very clearly just east of the MD/DE border, obs from that area are extremely unimpressive - I cannot find a single station gusting to TS force along the coast of either state, and KWWD in Cape May County, NJ, is only reporting NE 20 G 31. I'm definitely not trying to make a broader statement about the rest of the system here, but it's just downright weird to me that winds are that weak near the center.

The strongest winds continue to be located on the backside well to the S and SW of the circulation, and I think that idea could hold as Irene continues to move up the coast.

I am not sure how much rain we have had, but I am guessing in the last two hours hear in Ossining we have had at least 1 inch per hour rainfall rates. Some wind gusts up to at least 35 miles per hour. I was almost knocked down by a gust. I would guess we have had at least 2 inches here so far. I will go out soon and check my rain gauge to give you an exact amount.

Edit: Just went out-- 4.25 inches. I had to dump out the rain gauge because the capacity is 5 inches.

Wait wait wait...I thought Mt. Zucker would cause great lift to maximize your rainfall totals and allow you to be in the 925 mb low-level jet.

That band covering Cape May County looks absolutely ridiculous.

KWWD, in the center of it, is only gusting to 29 mph as of 2:55 am. For whatever reason, only rainfall rates seem to be intense in that band. The bands further up the NJ coast are producing stronger winds.
