janetjanet998
Irene looks pathetic on the infrared and the higher winds just NE of the eye are not mixing down data from the aircraft suggest its barely a hurricane around the core... it's possible you guys may get your strongest winds tonight in these bands rather then when the center hits The strongest winds with Irene may be spreadng away from the center soon

People were literally kissing Gilgo Beach goodbye yesterday. Earl did a such a number on it last year that the town added sand to it. I can't imagine the havoc Irene is about to wreak there. Cfa
Over 1,000,000 people are without power as we speak. Unbelieveable. Probably close to (or over) 2,000,000 now. 1.4 Million customers. It's calm and quiet outside now, I hear crickets.

There are some decent small tops around the center on the infared but the winds just aren't mixing down...been that way for days with this storm.... it was very interetsing that RIC gusted to 71 MPH well inland and in the NW quad this afternoon I could be wrong about the winds tomorrow near the ""inner core" I can't recall a low 950's MB low end Cat 1 before.....so who knows what is going to happen

LI for some reason and New England it does not seem to occur quite as often or as severe. May have something to do with a downslope factor for the locations more inland, not too sure. Sundog
Serious question: How is power going out for people when there's barely any wind out there? Even the rain hasn't been bad at all unless you're in NJ. There is not a leaf moving here in NE Queens.
earthlight
The news coverage of this system on the evening news has been absolutely atrocious..filled with commercials and almost zero coverage of the tornado warnings. There are the occasional good beach interviews that are live but otherwise they are playing old interviews from this afternoon and not covering the live developments. dbc
13 mph sustained here. 22 mph Gusts, lol. Yet 5 minutes away from me the GWB apparently has already been closed.
