sferic
Lynbrook/Valley Stream area Do most models have the eye of Irene going west or east of me? What is the extreme range west to east the eye can make landfall? Also, currently I'm in the Catskills (liberty NY) riding it out here, any tropical foce winds here? Thanks, jeff
whiteoutwx1796
Some shots showing the eye trying to open up again. I say by 2-3pm we'll have some kind of eye.

Direct hit or west on GGEM, UKIE and RGEM but that is just my untrained eyes. Not sure what to expect in the Catskills.

IsentropicLift
That dark ring around the center is a good sign, now that the western side is improving, the eastern side is taking a hit, probably due to dry air ingestion, could be awhile before she completely gets it out of her system

That shows Irene without any deep convection and the worst its looked in days.

IsentropicLift
Looks better now than it did an hour ago. This I have been watching this pretty much non-stop for the last two weeks, even when it was still a GFS pipe dream

IsentropicLift
yeah despite the fact that there is clearly a defined eye now, the rest of Irene still looks bad
jm1220
This storm is looking healthier by the minute guys, irene isn't done flexing her muscles yet. Fun times to come today The hurricane needs more convection for it to really ramp up again. I'd say it's about steady state, maybe slight nudge toward strengthening. This really is Irene's last chance though before land, colder water, and dry air affect it.
IsentropicLift
It's probably time we stop grasping for straws and just let whatever happens happen. There is obviously things going on here that are beyond most of our understanding.

winterwx21
The visible satellite looks like Irene "woke up", there's a clearly defined eye now Also looks like a slight western jog. We have to watch this closely, as any western jogs as it moves north means a better chance of it going inland in NC. Could mean a much weaker storm by the time it gets up here. tornadojay
The storm looks pretty healthy to me, just looking at some of the satellite presentation others have posted recently. It is very symmetrical and has good outflow in all quadrants... not too much shear.. warm waters.. It should be able to at least hold its own, you would think

F5TornadoF5
Winds blowing 50mph with gusts up to 60mph, 41miles southwest of Charleston, SC which is about 160miles to the northwest of the center. Pretty impressive especially considering the west side is suppose to be the weaker side. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/...n_page.php?...n=41004
