5.9 earthquake in Virginia

Recommended Posts

That's the biggest in that specific seismic zone, but not necessarily in Virginia.

ahh, yes.. good pt

The largest in the state's history was a 5.9-magnitude quake that hit western Virginia's Giles County, near the border with West Virginia in 1897. Smaller earthquakes that cause little or no damage are felt each year or two.

I remember some people telling me they felt the 4.5 on Dec 9, 2003. But it was like someone was doing roadwork for like 5 seconds.

Actually, the one back in 2003 sounded like a sonic boom over my house and then alot of shaking, but not for an extended period of time. It was the first earthquake I had experienced and even though not very big, it was quite frightening.

I was living in York County, VA at the time. Obviously, location counts.

Here in Richmond, near Carytown, the house bounced around pretty good. Hard to walk down the hall without reaching out with both hands. (2nd floor 90 yr old frame house). Minor crack in foundation from 2003 earthquake appears to be a bit larger. Co worker in Church Hill had a 2 foot high by 15 foot long section of their brick parapet fall to the sidewalk. There was a crew installing new gas lines out front and I was trying to run out and stop them from whatever they were doing....half way down the stairs I figured out it wasn't them!

Anyone got a spare helicopter, I want to fly it low over populated areas tonight just to **** with people.

If I had one I'd lend it to you just to be amused by you getting shot down.

Day of Revelations.... OK, so I work for the USCG HQ office in SW DC. My family and I just xfered from Alaska to our new home near Spotsylvania Courthouse. I was at work during the quake and our building shook to the point the we were concerned it might collapse. My family, wife and kids, were at home and got to enjoy the quake being only 29 miles from the epicenter. Not a fun experience for my wife and terrified children. Today I learned that our house is located very close to a fault line and that we had a nuclear power plant (North Anna) close by. Luckily, there's no apparent damage to our home. And yes... We did feel the 4.2 aftershock.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT TILTING... DEVELOPING...

tho, since that area is largely fill you gotta wonder if there are any real issues...

Got to love Drudge/FOX

The NPS said it is evaluating the structures to ensure that they are structurally sound and safe for all visitors. Agency spokesman Jeffrey Olson had told the AP that there was "absolutely no damage" to the Washington Monument, contrary to media reports elsewhere that it was leaning.

"Absolutely incorrect," U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said of media reports that the Washington Monument was leaning. "It stands tall and proud."

it was some police officer originally who stated it could be leaning.. but it was like moments after the quake. there were also reports of loose footings which i never heard more about. but yeah, apparently it might have taken some damage

The National Park Service says the Washington Monument may have suffered cracks near its top during Tuesday’s earthquake, and the monument could be closed indefinitely.

Park service spokesman Bill Line said there appear to be cracks “at the very, very top” of the 555-foot tall structure, and structural engineers were being brought in Wednesday to conduct a close inspection.

Meanwhile, the historic stone obelisk at the center of the Mall, south of the White House, will remain closed, and “could be closed for an indefinite period of time,” he said.
