Hoosier
Thanks...so looks like it occurred in an area that is not a complete fluke.
Kborne
My building in Newark shook north to south. Our building is long and on a n/s axis...we are right across from EWR airport along rt 95....We shook pretty good, I thought it may have been an attack, so did everyone in my office. klw
Felt it here in NE Vermont. It felt stronger than the earthquake that hit up here a year ago (5.0 by Ottawa).
Rainshadow
I was getting a U-Haul gassed up in Mount Laurel when it happened. The truck was a rocking...
NB-Weather
What's more interesting is that this occurred a day after the largest earthquake in Colorado in over 40 years. Oh and didn't feel it in southern CT. No reports on scanner either.
greg ralls
My wife & I are going to San Francisco in 2 weeks, and I just joked with her the other day that maybe we'd feel our first earthquake out there. Well, we both definitely felt this one here in the Philly area!
Absolute Humidity
Wow, out of the three quakes I felt in my lifetime, that was by far the strongest - No noise or rumble however, makes sense being some 200 miles away from epic center.
A-L-E-X
Chances of aftershocks? For the next few hours than the chances drop dramatically. When we can predict these things more reliably (read: at all), we'll probably have some first gen "earthquake chasers" roaming about.

MJW155
Talked to 2 relatives in Morris County, NJ. Neither felt a thing and didn't believe me until I told them to put the radio on. LOL. Earthquakes and hurricanes in the NE. You guys better watch out for a volcano forming next.
HoarfrostHubb
I was getting a U-Haul gassed up in Mount Laurel when it happened. The truck was a rocking... Don't bother knocking? I did not feel it...or at least didn't notice. Very cool, though. Colorado had a 5.0 earlier
shawnmov
This was absolutely terrifying from 39 floors in the air... 24 floors up in Boston was no picnic. That was wild! Lasted for about 40 seconds.

Bluescat1
I live in an old single 2 story wood frame house, and it felt like a 50mph wind was shaking the house.
winterymix
This was a shared experience with about 50 other people in the office. Weird psychological effect...low level fear, disorientation and "What the H*ll was that???" even though we knew what it was, it leaves an unsettled fealing. bigtenfan
This is really ominous right before Irene. i felt it at charlotte If I remember correctly on the Friday Afternoon just before Super Storm 1993 there was an earthquake on the east coast. phil882
It was barely noticeable in Albany, NY. I felt a little tremmor when I was opneing up a bank account, thought I was crazy so I didn't bother mentioning it to the teller. Well guess this was it. relic
centered about 9 miles from my house. at my partner's house in fredericksburg a grandfather clock fell over, stacks of materials have fallen, bricks fell from building in downtown fredericksburg, cracked drywall in one place that's immediately evident...normal earthquake stuff i guess
Ian
Just got let back into building. Streets of DC were packed. BIggest quake by far I've felt since leaving CA. Actually got a bit nervous for a second or two when it really bumped.. building was making noises (never know how well these are built).
Stormsfury
I was just thinking that. I'm surprised something of this size was felt over such a wide area. In CA, quakes of this size happen out in the desert all the time, and we don't feel them unless they're pretty close to the city, or at least in the Inland Empire. The 6.7 we had in 1994 was centered in the city, so of course we felt that really nicely. The mountain ranges out there absorb a lot of the shock. The Eastern US is bedrock, alluvial mud, and relatively flat and the shock waves travel quite readily, plus the Eastern US quakes are intrafault, and more of a speed shear versus the slipping of two different faults traveling in opposite directions

Basically, everything was swaying back and forth. It was actually pretty exciting!

To hear that it was centered in VA was pretty surprising to me.
SP
I was parked on a call and the hummer just started shaking like crazy. Thought wind and after a few secs my former years living in LA kicked in and on the open cnf bridge shouted earthquake and many others dud the same within seconds. Biggest shake I ever experienced in NJ. Not as bad as the Whittier quake which hit when I was in the shower.
Stormsfury
If I remember correctly on the Friday Afternoon just before Super Storm 1993 there was an earthquake on the east coast. 3 days before Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida, a 4.5 earthquake struck near Charleston in Summerville on August 21st, 1992 at 12:32 pm. that was crazy
