It's just a scenario based on past storms. I'll be surprised if Hispaniola doesn't significantly pull the circulation towards land.

kush, do you think that, based on how it's developing, passing over (or brushing) Hispaniola will not have an overall detrimental impact to strengthening? If so, can you detail why?

it has an UL anticyclone over it, the COC will stay over water the whole time, and no models are depicting the interaction with hispaniola as being a significant detrimental factor anymore. downsloping is always a bit of a concern, but the idea that hispaniola will suck this in and retard its persistent strengthening is unlikely, imo
