830 PM AST MON AUG 22 2011 THE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT FOUND A 850-MB FLIGHT LEVEL WIND MAXIMUM OF 106 KT ON ITS FIRST PASS THROUGH THE CENTER OF IRENE. BASED ON THIS...THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS ADJUSTED UPWARD TO 85 KT. OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS THE SATELLITE PRESENTATION OF THE HURRICANE HAS CONTINUED TO IMPROVE...ALTHOUGH NO EYE IS VISIBLE YET IN GEOSTATIONARY IMAGERY. HOWEVER...AN EYE HAS BECOME APPARENT ON THE SAN JUAN DOPPLER RADAR AND WAS ALSO SEEN IN A 2230 UTC SSMIS PASS. THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS FALLEN TO 981 MB BASED ON A DROPSONDE OBSERVATION OF 982 MB WITH 10 KT OF WIND AT THE SURFACE. GIVEN THAT THE ENVIRONMENT APPEARS CONDUCIVE FOR ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING...THE INTENSITY FORECAST HAS BEEN ADJUSTED UPWARD BY 15 KT THROUGH 36 HOURS WITH A SMALLER UPWARD ADJUSTMENT AT 48 AND 72 HOURS. ONLY SLIGHT WEAKENING IS INDICATED AT DAYS 4 AND 5. THE NEW FORECAST NOW SHOWS IRENE BECOMING A MAJOR HURRICANE ON TUESDAY AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. THE WIND RADII HAVE BEEN EXPANDED BASED ON AIRCRAFT DATA AND THE NEW INTENSITY FORECAST. NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE TRACK FORECAST ON THIS SPECIAL ADVISORY.

Boy, it didn't take long for another fan person to show up! The non-fan people would probably be amazed to know how many fan people there are. We're all over the place....but we're invisible, LOL.

You go strongwxnc!

OT when me and thewifey went on vacation a few months ago we forgot our "travel" fan, so I hit up a Walgreens and bought onesince sleeping without isn't a option.

I too dread the week of no power but Greenville has a good grid so short of a main feedline from Raleigh going down we should only have short periods of no power if we take a hit.

Got to have the fan

OMG - another one already!

The non-fan people are prolly thinking: "what the hell is this?" They've been surrounded by fan people all their lives and never knew!

We don't normally come out of the closet because there's almost never a need to. Without major power outages we'd be totally invisible!

same here. A fan in the bedroom , plus a white noise machine, and the air cleaner machine which hasn't gone off except during powerfailures, for 7+ years. But to keep this weather related, I'm enjoying the feeling of Fall in the air lately. The sunsets have been nice. Once Irene blows by, we'll probably have a really nice airmass change for a couple days, cleaning out all the junk in the air.

Oh gracious....another one, lol. Welcome to the club!

In Greenville you have a decent buffer from ocean don't you? (I'm not a native of this state so my geography here is only so-so.)

Well, I suppose a major hurricane can do a lot of inland damage....I just have no experience with them. I've never seen anything above a minimal Cat 1 (so you can bet I'm nervous with this Irene.)

Cape Fear has overhead lines all over the place...Ophelia knocked out my power for 18 hours...and I thought that was bad. I get dizzy thinking beyond that time frame.

We like fans for circulation AND white noise. I can't wait for fall weather either. 80+ dewpoints every day wears on a person.

Hilton Head started a 15 year program 10 years ago to put all power lines and cables under ground. It required a special tax, but in the long run, it's the only way to go for coastal communities. Especially for those with a tourist economy.

Well how bad it is here depends on lots of factors however we had gust to 90 in Bertha and 105 in Fran with plenty of damage mostly trees on houses. Greenville is a heavily wooded town and that's our biggest issues....then again we in my lifetime haven't had one hit as strong as Irene could be and at the angle she is hitting at assuming she hits ILMish moving N or NNE as a 110-120mph storm.

No need sitting there being scared. If this thing looks to pan out for the worst, just blow town. A few days in Asheville or Boone or Banner Elk (with your fan) could be very soothing. Return home when power is restored.

I might sit tight for a cat 3, but nothing more, not if I had options. ($)

Our lagoons are as well. The alligators are starting to have territory fights over lagoons, and that's not good for humans. Angry alligators are less passive than normal.

I was in Hilton Head this weekend and noticed water was low. Most of SC could definitely use the rain from Irene.
