ag3
Here's the all-important question: DOES SLEET COUNT? Sleet counts as snow. Trials rules are the 1st time Central Park puts trace in the snow column. So it should count.
ag3
December 5th. Bank it! That's the popular date for the 1st inch. All you need to win here is a trace, which can even occur in October.
Stormlover74
The only Decembers without even a trace of snow was 2006 and 1994 (in the past 20 years) That's the popular date for the 1st inch. ag3
The only Decembers without even a trace of snow was 2006 and 1994 (in the past 20 years) Do you know how many Novembers had a trace or more, in the past 20 years?
Stormlover74
It's more common than I realized. I believe one year we had a trace in October as well but that might have been outside the city only 11/8/91 - trace 11/29/95 - 2.9 11/28/96 - 0.1 11/16-17/97 - trace 11/2 & 11/27/02 - trace 11/13/04 - trace 11/24/05 - trace 11/19/07 - trace 11/20/08 - trace Do you know how many Novembers had a trace or more, in the past 20 years? So 9 out of the past 20 years have featured a November with a trace of snow. So almost half the time.
Stormlover74
Yep, and essentially meant nothing as far as how our winter was overall. '97 was very cold during that time and featured some of the coldest air of the entire season in mid November. Notably the last 2 Novembers had nothing but 95 and 02, 04, 05 did so it doesn't mean we'll see alot or a little. If we made the criteria be 1" or greater our chances are only 1 in 20 (though historically it's probably higher) Than you for the info. So 9 out of the past 20 years have featured a November with a trace of snow. So almost half the time.

I work in the city now.....I could easily walk to the zoo and bring a hair dryer to make sure it doesn't stick.

Last year in the suburbs it snowed twice in November. Not sure if anything fell in the city, but november traces are more common than you think. TheTrials
That's what I would think. Technically, if we're going by a trace, a trace is a flake. whenever the NWS announces the first trace falls, that's it. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about what is and isnt a trace. Guest Pamela
. Agree with forky. NYC will be lucky to see meaningful snowfall before mid-January, What leads you to that prediction?

ORH_wxman
What leads you to that prediction? It was not a serious post. I'd feel okay for NYC right now going into this winter. First trace I'll bet late Nov. Nina's have had some cold/snowy Decembers recently.

One of those days it came down quite hard (October 30) but the temps were in the mid 30s so it didn't stick.
