ThePhotoGuy
Wow...Wonder if we can confirm. Of course I can Effective 10 a.m. Friday August 26th Queen Anne’s County has declared a State of Emergency as Hurricane Irene moves towards us. All areas west of the Route 50/301 split are under mandatory evacuation orders effective Noon Friday. We expect all residents in the effected areas to evacuate by noon Saturday at the latest. Residents should evacuate either north on Route 301 or west on Route 50. The Bay Bridge will close when winds reach or exceed 55 miles per hour. Be advised: Emergency and County personnel will not be dispatched during the height of the storm to avoid endangering personnel. All businesses in the mandatory evacuation areas are ordered to close effective noon Saturday until further notice. There are two emergency shelters; none of which are located in the evacuation area. Church Hill Elementary School and Centreville Middle School will open their doors at noon Saturday. Pets will not be allowed in the shelters; except for certified guide dogs. All evacuees should remember to take along medications. http://qactv.wordpress.com/
TalcottWx
Wow...Wonder if we can confirm. WTF.. pulled up the county maps for MD. That evacuation doesn't seem warranted. Also shocked to see Cane Warnings so far westward. Baltimore County is not far from Queen Anne County!!
Sparky
Pretty strange that Carroll County continues to be left out of the TS Warning area given the general strength and trajectory of the hurricane.

Polka1
didn't they mean EAST of the 50/301 split? West. It's an area known as Kent Narrows. It's all super low lying and fairly populated. I guess they are just playing it safe, but if it jogs west it could send a decent surge up the bay.
yoda
...PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE CONDITIONS... THERE IS LITTLE CHANCE FOR HURRICANE CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME. ALSO...THE CHANCE FOR TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME IS UP TO 59 PERCENT.THIS REPRESENTS A GENERAL STEADY TREND SINCE THE LAST FORECAST. THE ONSET OF TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD START AS EARLY AS SATURDAY MORNING. first time thats been in there
mitchnick
maybe they are worried about flooding from surge on the west side. I would think not since winds should be NE to N'ly for the worst part of the storm

rosemont/old town
yes, I'm familiar with it I just would have thought they would have been more specific with their area of concern if it was Kent Narrows there's a lot of areas west of the split that are not part of Kent Narrows and far enough away from the water We just golfed at Queenstown Harbor two weekends ago and hung around Red Eyes for bachelor party like activities, I could understand the concern. Highly populated and very low leve without a great deal of options to get out if something did trend their direction.

Plus, even with the higher areas, most of the development is waterfront, so perhaps that weighed on the decision. Also, probably weighting residual worries from the surge that Isabel brought to the area.
Don Cherry's Jacket
I think you just get the bag. Not the sand We have always wondered what a resident can do with 5 bags. Yeah, that does sound kind of useless... I'm assuming sand is one of the things that flies out of home improvement stores, so it isn't like you're going to be able to buy sand. sauss06
Just heard the PD is going door to door in Bethany Beach DE for mandatory evac of everyone. I read below on OC MD web site about them being in phase 3 of their prepardness.. below was part of it Utilizing the authority under a local State of Emergency, the Mayor is banning the sale of all alcohol in Ocean City and requests that all businesses close beginning at midnight. Thats a damn shame. No Booze!
bigjohndc
I think in DC you can get sandbags filled by the city near the Nationals Ballpark. I was thinking since everybody was getting in on the sandbags I should get some for my 6th floor apartment. Never can be too safe.

We were wondering about the Bay Bridge closure wind requirements, as well as the getting through the Kent Narrows area. I just emailed this to him, and he isn't too thrilled about it either. Kicking Up A Storm
Question: Isn't Hurricane Floyd 1999 a better analog here than Isabel? I was in the suburbs of Philly and only in 6th grade for Floyd (Had pretty good flooding in that area, school shut down early. I remember we lost power, too....) so if this is a good analog, what was Floyd like for DC?

But it's an absolute zoo there, an estimated four-hour wait, with streets blocked off because of the crush of traffic.

I'm assuming sand is one of the things that flies out of home improvement stores, so it isn't like you're going to be able to buy sand. Just use dirt from your yard. It makes holes to hold the water AND fills your 5 bag allotment. Win-win.

Kmlwx
Pretty strange that Carroll County continues to be left out of the TS Warning area given the general strength and trajectory of the hurricane. Carroll County is not on a tidal waterway...... The most they could get is a inland tropical storm force wind warning. They are not the same. You can't get a tropical storm warning unless part of your county borders water.
