Kmlwx
the storm is not strengthening.. it's just big. i think this is good news for us. our biggest problem would be if it passed by as a tight storm etc. If it can maintain TS force winds 290 miles out we would easily get TS winds. However, they will diminish once over land. So that should shrink up a good bit.
RickinBaltimore
Murmors of towson u evacuating... that would be dumb That doesn't make any sense. I can see possibly, POSSIBLY having student move down some floors from the Residence Tower, but evacuate the campus?

Don Cherry's Jacket
add ODU and prolly a lot of others Probably less about "getting wet" and more about safety of getting to and from the school during a major, widespread and foreseeable weather event. sauss06
what for winds did we have with Isabel? 30 with higher gusts? i remember it was windy as hell. we had a lot of power outages and trees down the lower Susq. valley and i think we had like 2-3" of rain as well

nw baltimore wx
I can understand for sure at Salisbury but not Towson IMHO. Who cares if they get a little wet? They might be just concerned of parents and students traveling from areas more seriously impacted.
Ian
Right, because with weather there are only definites we'd all be better off if no one even mentioned the storm till it showed up on radar.
BethesdaWX
Well I remember a lot of wind in Isabel but to be fair - we were on her western side which probably helped a good bit. Obvious this will likely be weaker than Isabel by quite a bit since we're on the back quadrant, though Irene should be stronger and closer to us, so it's hard to tell. TS warnings seem awefully preliminary at this point.
North Balti Zen
So, my youngest is in a soccer tournament this weekend over in Poolesville, MD. The tournament organizers have doubled down and are not cancelling any of the games, including those set for Saturday night and Sunday morning. For the record, I like the cut of their gib on this - go for it. That said, this was from their main page: Hurricane Irene Update: 10:15 am Friday - All games are ON as scheduled. This includes Saturday evening and Sunday games. The latest location specific forecast for the SoccerPlex regarding Irene, from a nationally recognized forecasting firm based in Germantown, is that the storm is shifting far enough east that we should be able to play all games as scheduled. Rain and wind at the SoccerPlex is forecasted to be significantly less than the rest of the metro area. Thus, we are postponing any decisions to modify the tournament schedule and the tournament staff will continue to closely monitor the forecast. Which one of you guys is that? lol
loshjott
"Rain and wind at the SoccerPlex is forecasted to be significantly less than the rest of the metro area." WinterWxLuvr
im not.. i was implying its "too be expected" that the nam is falling in line with the global powerhouse models. 2 nights ago at 84 i said it matched close to the euro on final position but it was going to be in "spray" mode for a while after.. which it was. now this may not be the final answer but it's getting closer. euro/gfs blend... tho maybe 18 hours out the nam will figure out where the exact heaviest strip may be (or more likely the output of that stripe). I'm interested in seeing the next GFS run. I'm also hoping with what looks like a large storm that isn't strengthening (your post), that that might let that rain field spread out a bit to the west. WxUSAF
Mad Cheese posted a nice ewall graphic of the latest NAM run valid at 12z Sunday. Shows 40kt +10m wind over Baltimore, eastern HoCo, AA county and down to Wes-land. 900mb winds at 70kt+. That's TS sustained and gusts to hurricane force. North Balti Zen
Yup...playing kids soccer is worth the risk to life and limb to drive 30mi in TS conditions. I am discovering just how serious a business kids soccer is. I had told the parents on the team (I got suckered into team manager) that I thought the Saturday day games would probably be played ahead of the storm's arrival into DC metro, but I am surprised they are holding firm on the Saturday night and Sunday schedule. Probably they will change their minds later when the forecasts finish locking in. Probably.

Probably they will change their minds later when the forecasts finish locking in. Probably. There are some crazy parents and coaches. I played in the Baltimore metro baseball league when I was growing up, which is the highest level youth baseball in the area. We could have severe thunderstorms passing overhead and people would still not cancel the game. Just pause for a few minutes. Coaches would be out on the field raking in the kitty litter during epic downpours. Worst still...they wouldn't cancel the games ahead of obviously incoming storms and make us drive from Harford County to places like Howard County or Carroll Country during rushhour to sit and wait to see if we could end up playing. lsukev
EasternUSWx over on the main board said the last few ticks, she's been moving 353 degrees, a bit west of due north, where she was moving due north prior to that. Might be a little wobble, a trend, or nothing. We'll see. I THOUGHT she was moving west of north.
