Ongoing Midwest Drought Conditions

April-June kicked butt for EVV...

April: 11.77" (+7.29")

May: 7.90" (+2.89")

June: 6.52" (+2.42")

LAF's year-to-date is tainted, as the rain gauge malfunctioned in May...only reporting 1.21". If we use the WL COOP May total in place (7.40") then the surplus grows...

37.42" (+10.01")

Not bad, not bad at all. I am trying to get a feel for October. I would love to say yes we are going to have more rain but my gut feelings says dry once again. CPC calls for a below average October.

Ugh, yeah I saw that a couple of days ago. Let's hope they're wrong...or if anything, the negative departures for Oct aren't severe. But I guess this is Nina fall climo at play. Which of course reverses as we get into winter...

Yep! And of course there was last year during the same time in which we were in such a severe drought and yet above average for the year for precipitation I believe. I just hope there are no burn bans. The map that B-rent posted above from our agency is current but we weren't exactly shocked when a county or two declared a ban. At least we dont have this:

That's an ugly looking map. Last year at this time was bad. :(

We'll see how September finishes, but it would seem we'll be better off than last year. October, well...

Statewide precipitation and ranks (1895 to current):

August 2010: 1.87" (3rd driest)

August 2011: 2.64" (30th driest)

September 2010: 1.35" (12th driest)

September 2011: ???

October 2010: 1.19" (13th driest)

October 2011: ???

Yep, I guess so.

Here's the HPC 5-day total precipitation forecast. Every little bit helps...

Yeah, we're in what I would call a very mild drought at this point here, but adding an inch or two this coming weekend into next week will allow us to approach our September average. It's surprising that so many other areas in the GL are seeing an abnormally rainy year.

I don't know how to find this data, can you post a comparison between now, and this time 2010?

I can't find a way to do that, in map form. But here's the text form, year-to-date total precip through yesterday, this year versus last year for central Indiana...

IND

2011: 34.25"

2010: 26.12"

MIE

2011: 32.43"

2010: 29.92"

HUF

2011: 33.28"

2010: 31.42"

BMG

2011: 41.33"

2010: 30.39"

LAF

2011: 37.47"*

2010: 30.12"

*using WL COOP for May totals

Found this on the drought website, a comparison to drought conditions in Indiana for the last "roughly" 365 days. Not the best map, but still: http://www.drought.gov/dcpaws/rest/IN/graph?w=800&h=450

You could really tell here by how the lawns never went dormant-if it were not for the heat you could not tell much of August from May given the lush and green vegetation. Only in the last couple weeks have a few things gotten a bit dry looking.

Same here. For the most part the grass has stayed very green despite a hot summer

Those 2011 precip maps are useless here, as well as nws accumulated radar. Tons of rain until about 6/15 then it stopped! We have less than 3" since 6/15, most of that was in 2 thunderstorms in the past 100 days. The remainder was showers of .3" or less each time, most was virga. I have about 50 mowing customers and I have had little work maybe 1 day a week since 7/15. While the crops are not bad this is the worst SE Iowa drought in over 20 yrs.

KIND story up about the summer drought being over for much of Indiana. Also, September 2011 is the 20th wettest at IND...so far.

Rains End Drought in Much of Indiana

Recent rainfall of 3 to nearly 9 inches in September has ended the summer drought conditions in much of Indiana. Most of this rainfall has occurred since September 14, with a large share of this rain falling from the 19th through the 25th. After a dry summer at the Indianapolis airport, rainfall for September is the most since the record wet September of 2003. Unfortunately, this recent rainfall came too late for many summer crops.
