4.58" here now. The SW part of Nassau has been inundated. I don't know if this is some sort of record, but I saw 2.8" of rain in one hour between 4 and 5, I can't remember ever seeing that kind of rainfall in one hour before.

All of Long Island is in the yellow, orange and red-- I dont believe I've ever seen that before.

Some areas will likely report 10"+ of rain by the time the event ends....

William, how much rainfall do you remember getting in October 2005? Did you get 10" or more in one day from that prolonged event? That's the only other event I can remember being of this magnitude.

The area out here was just under 20" over three days..with around 9" falling on the last day...

Wow, get a load of that 16" rainfall total in Lynbrook LOL and JFK almost a foot. And up to 18" in your area! I dont think we will ever match those totals... especially for one day.

William, did JFK or Islip or one of the other Long Island locations get 20" that month? Seeing some places get 18" in one day makes me think someone came close to 30" for the month (Upton?) Thanks for the numbers, I didn't know they were so high lol.

22.14" of rainfall was measured at Upton in October 2005, the wettest month on record there....

JFK had 14.97" in Oct 2005 and Islip 14.07" that month.

Deleted my post, that's the reports from 05, lol. Just got in from work, and no sleep yet. Either way, lot of water rescues ongoing now out on LI.

Yup, I was trying to reply to it and it came up blank lol. We were reminiscing about October 2005, because that was about as historic for rainfall as January 1996 was for snowfall (maybe even moreso!)

We are over 5 inches of rain and this storm is barely 3 hours old lol.

Yup, and look down here, you guys have hours upon hours of this to go yet. Backbuilding going on all the way to VA.

Haha...I was wondering about those foot reports

Currently no FF watches/warnings in those areas. Those of you with these obscene totals, definitely submit your reports!!

A comparatively paltry 1.67" here as of 7 AM.

I remember some people saying that Long Island wouldn't get much because of some sort of marine layer-- I think they were forgetting that any kind of marine layer is negligible in July and August-- last I checked our SST were 78 degrees. If anything, the SST are warmer than the air temps.

I'm still not particularly sold on this rain event especially for east of the City. There does seem to be a broader rain shield that develops on most models that sweeps most people but if this is the kind of convective/daytime heating kind of event we're seeing today, it's hard for me to see coastal areas getting hit that hard, at least compared to NJ. I'd wager a lot that the usual suspects in north or central NJ run away with this event. Hopefully tomorrow and Monday I'm proven wrong.

Has there ever been a time when you didn't write a paragraph like this prior to the onset of a precipation event in the local area? Believe me, I would not call you out if you only did it once or twice...

LOL William that actually reminds me of Jan 26-27 last winter when a bunch of people were dismissing our chances for getting snow. Getting that surprise dump in the morning changed those opinions quick! Pretty much along the lines of the quick deluge we got this morning.

My memory is shot...I can't even remember the time of day the storm you mention started....lol....though i distinctly recall the 2/11/1983 blizzard starting at 1:00 PM Friday afternoon....

I shouldn't be so quick to say that something like October 2005 wont happen again in our lifetimes-- we've obviously seen an uptick of big events in the last few years, so it's entirely possible we'll live to see some of those October 2005 records broken..... perhaps even in the not to distant future.
