cyclone77
To me the new GEM looks very similar to the 12z GFS. Drops a lot of snow from Iowa through northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin on east.

jhamps10
To me the new GEM looks very similar to the 12z GFS. Drops a lot of snow from Iowa through northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin on east. except the low in the GEM is over I'm guessing on track LAF instead of Flora on the 12z GFS.. but I see the similarities for sure... JoMo
Well it all depends on how far S the energy digs before it explodes a low. Euro starts in 30 mins or so and tombo mentioned he may be here to do the play by play as it comes out.

buckeye
well, about all i take from tonites runs so far is every model went south that I've seen....granted not necessarily in a significant way, but still south, (gem, gfs, nocraps). Question is whether it's the beginning of a trend,or just a synchronized wobble.

Is that just model physics being different or is there some upstream system/pattern taking place that causes it to dig so much more on the GFS? Powerball
here's ggem 850 & precip in inches 120 & 132....congrats for those east & south of me Hmm, Detroit did pretty good this run. The low occluded before the precipitaiton got there (and a CCB is coming through). Chicago initially starts off too warm.

Chicago initially starts off too warm. Yup looks like atleast an inch of qpf along and south of M59-I96. The low doesnt seem to be occluding? GFS got rid of a transfer and I dont think i see a transfer on the ggem. I could be wrong

That probably also explains why it's mvoing due east instead of NE.

The stronger the low the less likely there will be a transfer?

Powerball
Is detroit all snow? It appears so given the intense omega (CCB), sub-540m thickness values and sub-zero 850mb temps. It looks like the onset may be sprinkles/light rain at worst. On to the EURO!!!

Powerball
Alright, so it's not all snow. Usually when 850mb temps are sub-zero and you have intense vertical montion snow is a very save bet.
