NYC almanac for December 24th

I know of one day in February 1969 with a 35/34 temp range...I'm not sure if there was a day with the same max/min?...Probably not...

I'm looking over the METAR's for February 23, 1969 and I see that the highest temperature that I could find was two degrees Celsius and the lowest temperature I could find was one degree Celsius.

today is the anniversary of the blizzard of 1964...A very underrated snowstorm...

You are correct - a very much underrated storm. I was working at AT&T on Fulton St in lower Manhattan as a mail room messenger and had to make several deliveries in the middle of the storm. The wind was very strong in lower Manhattan reminiscent of the Boxing day storm. During my third delivery I was struggling against the wind, holding on to whatever I could find to keep from falling down, when a gust of wind knocked down someone walking along side of me. I had to help him to his feet . When I got back to the office I was told to make a fourth trip. For the only time in my life I refused a direct order even though I could have been fired. My boss looked out at the storm and said forget about it.

A very underrated storm.

we might consider starting a new thread for the potential for a record breaking February this year for temperature which currenty in NYC is 39.8 which is 4th warmest - precip which totals 0.15 which is number 1 driest so far and snowfall which is in the top 10 least snowiest so far overall have to investigate if this would be the number 1 month if you combined all 3 of these .....

it is one of the worst for winter weather but it's only half over...We can only hope for a good ending and March...I won't rule out anything until May this year...many winters that were mild or snowless or both had a last minute cold shot the first few days of Spring...even 2002 had a cold period in early April with three straight mornings below freezing before the heat wave...that year had the least amount of freezing days with 47...2011-12 has 30 so far and it looks like that record could be beat this year...

Anyone else notice how often 1888 has one of the coldest mins, maxes or both over the course of the entire winter. The March blizzard is famous for having occured following a "mild" spring day, but that mild day was a rare thing that winter. The OKX website only lists 1887-88 as tied for the 12th coldest Dec-Jan-Feb, but they sure did have a lot of very cold days from start to finish that winter. Per the same website, 1888 did have the 3rd coldest January and the coldest March followed by the 3rd coldest April and the 9th coldest May in the past 140 years. 1888 then went on to have the coldest July and the coldest October on record for NYC.

That incredible run started the previous fall with 1887 having the second coldest September of the past 140 years, the 6th coldest October, and the 9th coldest November.

What a run from 9/1887 right through October of the following year. Kind of the "polar" opposite of what we are in now.

besides the 21" from the blizzard of 88 there was over 20" of snow from other events...1887-88 had more than its share of inland running storms between severe arctic outbreaks bringing heavy rains to the area...

Changing expectations. The NYC radio news stations are making a point of saying how chilly it is this morning at 44 in central park. Thats just 1 degree too low to get on today's Highest Min list.

the winter that wasn't is still here...I hope April and May won't be cooler than normal...Yesterday's record high minimum was erased just before midnight when the temperature dropped ten degrees from 60 to 50 between 12 and 1am...

A very chilly late May day back in 1967. Further north it was worse. The Catskills got dusted with snow, there was an inch of snow at Peru, VT and 6" of snow at Pinkham Notch, NH. Almost 1816 type of stuff.

I remember that day and hearing about the snow up north...1967 was very cold from February to May...June was warm but the rest of the summer wasn't...
