The 3.00 inch hail report looks like the new record largest hailstone size for Long Island/Queens/Brooklyn area.

The previous record that I was able to find for here was 7/10/89 2.50 inch in Suffolk.

5 SUFFOLK07/10/19891700Hail2.50 in.0000

08/01/2011 0430 PM

New Hyde Park, Nassau County.

Hail m3.00 inch, reported by trained spotter.

Spotter measured hail at 3.0 inches. Car windshield

shattered on Durham Road.

Judging by the high water/flood marks and talking to people in the areas that were affected, the hail and not the rain was the big story.THe rain was torrential and there was big flooding, but there have been worse rainstorms over the past several years. Many say JULY 18 2007 was the worst rainstorm in recent memory.JULY 31 1996 I remember LIR Mineola Station being flooded to nearly the platform leve, yesterday it diidnt even cover the tracks.lTHe hail was unbelievable though,so many leaves stripped off of trees and hail damage to cars.A Historic storm in that sense.

My heaviest rain in the shortest amount of time here in Long Beach was 6/22/95.I remember the torrential thunderstorm began around 12:45 am

and continued until around 2:15-2:30 am.The storms kept back building right overhead and Long Beach picked up about 5.20 inches of rain

during that time period. We couldn't drink the water the next day since a water pipe was undermined and broke. The grocery store was jammed

with people buying bottled water.I believe there was also a partial ceiling collapse where there was a renovation being done.

The torrential rains were highlighted the next morning on The Weather Channel.

Description:

Torrential rain caused extensive urban flooding. Rainfall amounts generally ranged between three and four inches however isolated amounts of six inches occurred overnight. Major roadway flooding occurred along the Belt Parkway.

I remember those storms. They were elevated and developed several hours after a backdoor cold front pushed through ending a siege of 3 consecutive 95+ degree days.

CHECK THIS VIDEO OUT...A driver on the LIE by Little Neck, Queens. His windshield cracks from the hail. You can see the mayhem on the LIE. Cars stopped dead and pulled over because of broken glass.

Smart move to hide under trees to help protect their cars....then again they are taking a chance if the tree falls on the car.

I did not notice it yesterday but I guress the hail was large enough in Douglaston because the hood and roof of my car has little dings all over it. It was parked at the train station and only had a baby tree over it. Sigh......

My parents are getting new windshield, hood and trunk to their car. Body shop was packed this morning with flatbeds bringing cars in.

It's normally white......But it can be many colors....the colors can be caused by what's in the cloud/air and the color of the bolt can also depend on how hot it is; the hotter the lightning, the closer the color will be to the end of the spectrum.

Yes, I was reading about that too-- it's like star color-- the redder the cooler, the bluer or "violet-er"/"purpler" the hotter.

Its old news, but I was in Rhode Island last week and missed this (not by much...great light shows off to the southwest). Loved the cool video. We did get some awesome mammatus (best I have seen), but no rain:

Damn... that looks like some of the drawings of mammatus in those old grade-school weather books. That is sick.
