Highest LOW iemperature I've had since moving here two years ago. 77 at 7 a.m., with no dew or wind.

very muggy and humid , warm morning here, foggy and the temp dropped to 73.4. There's a pretty intense band of rain setting up just to my north by 3 or 5 miles, and thats where its stationary. I hate to miss that close, but last Sept there was a huge rain event that I missed out on, where training along 74 gave over 5" of rain there and I didn't get a drop.

 Man it's almost spooky how we keep having very similar results. You got the half inch the other night while I got a half inch yesterday. The best once again misses you and once again the best missed me too to the southeast where radar indicates 2.5 inches. I've lost count on how many times i've gotten scraps this year while nearby got pounded. Half inch though is better than nothing for sure. But it would be nice to actually be in the sweet spot for once, which hasn't happened since our winter snows.

The surrounding topography is important though. There is a big difference between a huge expanse of an area that is at 1200 feet like in the plains than one that is at the top of a ridge at 1200 feet surrounding by lower elevations. It's why places at 5000 feet in the southwest can hit 100 while 5000 feet here wouldn't get close. Or why the freezing height/snow line is so high in the himalayas. However, with that said atlanta's elevation is not that high, only a few hundred feet higher than mine (i'm at around 750 or so) and it's a gradual increase compared to the surrounding area and not a sharp one. It would seem that fact would mean they would heat up more. Not to mention all the heat coming from the concrete and asphalt (although atlanta does have a good amount of trees vs other cities).

So despite the increased elevation, one would think the other factors would at least cancel it out but clearly elevation in large part seems to keep them from reaching 100. Maybe weak upslope flow/cooling also contributes. I notice atlanta often times reports a modest wind speed even if the high is overhead and the wind is calm here. Given the fact weak upslope flow would result with winds from every direction except from the NNE, in most cases the air is going to be cooled very slightly most of the time due to that upslope flow.

One would think such a gradual increase to such a modest elevation wouldn't matter much but it sure as hell shows it's effects during winter time as in post frontal situations. I am always warmer (by 5 to as much as 8 or 9 degrees) and have less cloud cover than atlanta (often times sunny while atlanta is totally cloudy). And interesting to note that during the summer I am usually about 5 degrees warmer too. Amazing to me how such a small amount of elevation can make such a big difference.

Yeah, a 300' increase in elevation would only drop temps by around 1 degree. The real reason-as you said-is due to Atlanta's position atop the "eastern continental divide" and the fact that the area almost always gets upsloped. I know ATL has a lot more <32 days than Athens, despite usually starting out a good bit warmer in the morning.

In the end it's a wash when it comes to what counts (winter events). Your area does great in CAD and in major storms (more moisture from storms "bombing out" in the Atlantic reaches you). Atlanta area often does better in the smaller, nickle and dime events.

Are a lot of us in for some storms later today? Looking back into Western TN it appears like a complex is clicking along pretty well. If it holds together we could have some nice rains for much of us SE posters. btw if anyone could PM me instructions on how to have animated radar/satellite loops in my posts I would be in your debt.

Models point to a end in the heat wave for the Charlotte area from mid next week and onward.

Great News. At work and not a chance to dig around, but hopefully Robert will elaborate on this. 5 days down and 26 days to go until the month I hate the worst weather wise is over with. July runs a close second.

Heavy rain continues to fall here. It's done this for 2 hours non-stop aside from the consistent loud, rumbling thunder. I almost can't believe the weather decided to do this. If the clouds and rain stay long enough, I doubt the predicted highs will come to pass. We could use a day off from the heat for once.

You can never catch a break. central SC is just a really hot place in the Summer.

The GFS does shift things around toward the better, starting now. The ridge in Texas gets squashed back as height falls all over the Country basically except the Southwest. We finally go below the 588dm heights which would put us closer to average temps for about a week, plus with blocking showing up in northwest Canada, the flow is right to send MCC activity at any point next week from the Plains and mid. Miss. Valley to the Southeast, in addition to the regular afternoon thunderstorm chances. And that goes for the bulk of the whole Southeast, so atleast rain chances +cooler air are in the works.

Hi guys! Long time no post. Been to Alaska and back and moved houses in the past month. I just got internet back yesterday at our new location, now in hickory proper with avianman and hkywx. There's been nothing but steady rain and clouds all morning long here. I have yet to get to 80 today and I've picked up 1.16 inches of rain according to the ol' Vantage Vue.

It's really dark here for midday even the crickets are still chirping.

Light sprinkles with some thunder in the distance.

75.3

I'll second that sentiment. I played disc golf this morning before the rain at Glenn Hilton Park. By the last couple of holes it seemed like twilight with the sun about to go down. This was at 10:45 AM. Really low clouds and under the trees provided the effect.

I dont know if it could be raining any harder right now. Definitely has to be some flooding going on.

Just judging from the radar the last 5 hours and the reports coming in , it looks like serious flooding is occurring, or about to occur for Gaston, Lincoln and now Charlotte proper. Already 5" or more has occured in just a few hours in part of the Lincoln/Gaston border areas. A meso low formed just west of Meck county and set up heavy rain training, and now its finally moving a little.

Impressive rainfall totals around the Charlotte area. (image at the bottom)

Widespread power outages also reported.

Over 8" near High Shoals.:arrowhead: I don't think I've ever experienced that here. Seems like every Summer, the dry nw flow always ends up being a bonus for the piedmont right around the Mecklenburg county area. The upstate's loss is inevitably the I-77 corridor's big gain. Its happened each Summer since 2006 I think. I feel extremely lucky this particular Summer to have got scraped a couple times , but you never see a large amount of slow moving rain swirling in the Upstate of SC to areas just south of 74. Location means everything in nw flow and the proximity to the mtns.

The ECMWF is on board (or atleast 00z was) for a cool down to near normal temps and atleast better chances of rain through the next 10 days. May end up with dual strong blocking, one near the north pole (or nw Canada) and another ridge in ne Canada. This time of year its influence isn't as great as winter, but this fits with changing seasons, although nearly a month early. If we maintain it, or it re-curs, like I think it will, we'll have early Autumn fronts this year.

The N.C. Department of Transportation said at 1:30 p.m. that southbound Interstate 85 is closed near mile marker 38, in north Charlotte. High water was blocking several lanes there.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police at 1:30 p.m. reported high water partially blocking a number of streets and intersections, mostly in or near Center City and in west Charlotte. High water also is being reported in the Matthews and Stallings areas, southeast of Charlotte.

The rain is falling in a corridor stretching from Shelby across Gastonia, Lincolnton, Charlotte and Monroe, and then across the state line into Chesterfield County, S.C.

A hair and nail salon in Charlotte's Southend area had its ceiling cave in on several customers while they were getting their nails and hair done.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. at a salon in the Atherton Mills development on South Boulevard. Several women had their hair and nails ruined and the ceiling was destroyed, but no one was hurt.
