This heat began in May.....and hasn't let up.

Tomorrow will be two weeks for me. This evening I had the added insult of having radar showing rain over me, but outside there was none finding the ground :) Can't catch a break lately, just loads of thunder...and I am happy for the clouds. I'm figuring Irene will find us with some rain, as long as it isn't a fish storm....been a while since we had a TS come through. Tony

Temp - 65.3

Clear

Calm wind

Frightened by the possible hurricane? Ran back to the high ground, mountain boy :) Nice to hear from you! Did you catch flipper again? Bull sharks chew off your toes?

In the weather front, that warned cell just to my south is booming and crashing, and trying to back fill up to me, but so far the rain seems to be a few miles south still. T

If the 6Z GFS verifies Atlanta will set a new record for most 90+ degree days in a year. That would be pretty impressive.

Side Note: mby has picked up torrential downpours the last two days in a row. After two weeks of nothing it was quite the welcome sight.

one more week and Summer is done (june-aug) and I am extremely pleased how this one worked out for me. Finally, it rained in Summer. I had 2 storms last night and one the night before. I'll tally at the end of the month, but all 3 Summer months totalled nicely, around average, even though most were small events, there were enough .50" and greater. The grass is the greenest its been since 2005, so after 5 straight Summers of brutal heat and NO rain, this year is much better. However, the rivers and lakes still look pretty bad, and the smaller streams are close to the flow of the previous Summers, nearly gone. We need major above average rains with some duration to recharge those, so it's misleading to look around and see how green everything is this year, as its only topsoil wetness. Deep down, its as dry as it ever was the last 5 years. We can't get any duration to any of the rain events here west of CLT, but its certainly better than NO rain like last Summer.

Any end in sight to this horrible heat ? I hope we're not looking at 90's until the end of September like last year. If that's the case Atlanta will end up with over 100 days of 90+ this year, shattering the old record of 90. You would think that a strong storm like Irene would change the weather pattern and give us a little relief in the heat.

Earlier it looked like Irene might head up into the SE but now not so much. Places on the NC/SC coast will probably cool off a bit...wild guess here. In my experience 90s become rare around mid-September, not to say they are impossible.

Meanwhile, it's an October-y 72/43 here!

We do have a front coming through so the next few days should "only" be low 90s. What I hate is the lack of rain, not even a remote chance for at least 1 more week, will likely end up with less than 5" combined for July and August. At least I can vicariously watch what Irene does to take my mind off the numbing banality of the local weather....

Feels wonderful outside the morning. Currently 66 degrees with a dew point of 54 and a breeze out of the NE @ 5mph.

Also just wanted to say that I will be beginning my studies today back at UNC-Charlotte towards a M.S. degree in Earth Science with a focus on meteorology of course. After being somewhat bummed about the job market right now I'm very excited about this opportunity.

I agree. It was 58 this morning as I left the house at 5:15 for a run. Freaking awesome!!!

Good luck this semester man! (OT - I will start at Gardner-Webb this fall pursuing a masters in School Administration. Not related to weather but, school is school)

Yeah it does really suck. Watching irene will not take my mind off of it though because every time I see it or think about it, I think about the fact that for a long time it looked like our area (especially eastern half) would get some major impacts from it. Now of course we are stuck in the muck of subsidence and boredom. It would be different if it never appeared to have a chance to effect us.

At least it felt cool this morning. I sure as hell will be glad when fall gets here. I am a bit surprised that atlanta might set the 90 degree record because although it has been hot this summer, it doesn't seem as hot as it was last summer here where there was something like 70 or 80 90 degree days here and multiple times we got above 100, and in a few cases well above 100.

Enjoy it. Who is going to be your advisor?

I'm guessing we're so used to it by now, that the record just doesn't seem as hot anymore. Plus I think humidity has been lower in general on our hot days. Last year felt hotter to me in general, though at least it felt MUCH wetter.

As for me, its probably one of my worst summers ever. Barely an inch of rain since July 5th. Every day there's been a rain chance, I seemed to have storms pop up within a few miles at most, on either side, but not a drop here. Honestly, I've lost all hope for rain at this point. When it comes at all, I'll be one very pleasantly surprised gardener, with already dead plants... arrowheadsmiley.png
