november rain
I just purchased two new UPS's that will now keep me up and running for hours in case of a power failure and also protects me from lightning strikes. I hate leaving my equipment unprotected. Don't leave home without one... or don't stay home without one... or don't be without one... whichever you prefer! I have my computers, cable dvr, the lcd tv and cable modem all on UPS.... next stop will be for entire house to be on one but its still a bit out of my budget for this year. DaculaWeather
I bought two APC's of this model: http://www.apc.com/p...00&tab=features I've always used APC UPS's, both at work and at home. I like the piece of mind that if I get struck by lightning and my attached equipment is damaged or destroyed, they'll repair or replace the devices. NCSNOW
With 4 invest out in the Atlantic, this looks like the only candidate to have a serious shot at affecting US next weekend. Robert looking at the models long range pattern(crap shot I know) IF?? this storm ends up cruising due west, how is the table set steering current wiseDays 6-10. I thought if the NAO went positive, that would open the door more for storms to hit the us as oppossed to recurving OTS.
UNCCmetgrad
Just drove through some of the damaged areas near downtown Belmont. Looks like the worst wind damage thus far since spring. I feel sorry for the people of this neighborhood as this is the 4th direct hit they have taken from a downburst this year. When I have a little more time later I will try to post pics. MotoWeatherman
Got a quick .03" from a very short lived pop up shower. Nice surprise but now the sun is out in full force and it is humid.
Snowless in Carrollton
It looks like the dry season has commenced here. Hasn't rained in nearly a week and the afternoon pop up storms seem to be diminishing, as they usually do this time of year.

Hasn't rained there in nearly a week? start complaining after it's been 3+ weeks. Many in the SE (not including me) have had much worse than just a week without rain. jrips27
Been dry and hot around here this week. I'm at 1.47" for August. Next solid chance of rain looks to be Saturday Night/ Sunday. That forecasted 86 on Monday looks really nice when its been 95.
dsaur
Boy, low humidity/dewpoint sure makes 91.1 seem almost refreshing Had to take down another tree this afternoon, and it wasn't too bad out. A huge pine had died from the pine beetle and was withing easy range of the high tension lines, so I had the EMC out. They cut the top out and left about 60 feet of trunk standing there. Near the well house, by the chainlink fence, in range of the telephone wires. When I asked them about it they said it won't make the power lines now, and took off. Talk about service these days, lol. With no limbs left to shoot an arrow over, I had to got up my 28 foot ladder, put a cable around it, and hope I had enough leverage with the come-a-long to get it going like I wanted. 28 foot up a 60 foot trunk isn't even close to a good pulling point. I lucked out, and it came with the cable, but I was on pins and needles cutting that thing in case it went where it wanted to. A job like that goes better with low humidity T
MotoWeatherman
Today is my lucky day. Pop up storm number two was a good one. They may not last long but sure do dump it quick and then exit. .41" for the day.
Snowless in Carrollton
Well, I was hoping for a cooldown next week but it doesn't look like there will be much of one. Another hot week next week. This from FFC: COOLING...HOWEVER...WILL BE MODEST AT BEST...WITH 850MB TEMPS HOVERING NEAR +20C. NEAR MAXIMUM INSOLATION WILL PUSH TEMPERATURES INTO THE 90S...BUT MOST AREAS SHOULD REMAIN IN THE 90-93 RANGE
UNCCmetgrad
Here are the photos I took driving and walking around downtown Belmont today. Many of these photos were taken in the historic district with very large older houses. I actually can't believe more houses did not get hit. I could have taken a couple more dozen photos but I think you will get the point. I have been very lucky this year was with these downburst wind events (knock on wood) as this was once again only a little over half a mile from the house. Solak
UNCC, you probably saw this house in your wanderings.... it was posted on FB yesterday evening... " We had a 'reported' tornado in Belmont today and I think it concentrated on my yard. Trees are down everywhere and my garden took a beating. My japanese maples are crushed under a humongous branch on the DECK!! What in the smack!!??? I am too shocked to cry about it.

Eerily reminds me of the wind events back in Spring, especially the one that featured the unusual V-shaped bowing segment. Hopefully we don't experience another one of these anytime soon. Gaston county's had enough cleanup days this year.

UNCCmetgrad
How many times is Downtown Belmont going to take it on the chin this yr? I don't know but I'm sure they are tired of the cleanup. I'm wondering how many times I can get lucky without taking a direct hit. I have a large oak tree about the size of the ones in the picture and its well within striking distance of my house. Fortunately I only lost two large limbs out of the tree in my front yard. This years thunderstorm activity has certainly made up for the last couple of years thats for sure. The one bright side is I'm doing well in the rainfall department with 3.51" for the month so far.
Lookout
I got drilled last night with a great storm. Was some wicked lightning (although you could barely here the thunder due to how heavy the rain was) and some gusts up to 35 to 40mph. When it first started it was some of the largest raindrops I think you can actually ever get because it sounded almost like hail but it wasn't. They were so large they could be individually seen quite a distance from the yard light and at the distance they were, it was extremely rare. It was an absolute deluge and you could see the field completely flooded thanks to all the lightning. I Picked up 2.15 inches. I Certainly didn't expect to get any around 6 or 7pm though. I did see the storms in the upstate/far far ne ga..I watched them but figured they had no chance of making it here. Indeed at one point they started to weaken considerably (around the time gsp issued a warning for elbert county). But a new and very intense cell fired up in jackson county and refueled the entire thing. The new cell's outflow combined with the outflow from the original group of cells and it exploded over madison/oglethorpe and elbert counties. Despite no warnings, they looked more intense than at any point that they did have warnings earlier in the evening. Indeed radar out of macon showed some 65+ DBZ returns at some points. As impressive as it was, it was equally impressive when it ended and was moving away because there was "bombs" going off in one half of the sky why the other half of the sky was totally clear with stars out. It just looked and felt so strange to see such a contrast. Needless to say, the last 2 weeks have been far far better than the previous 8 to 10 weeks here. eyewall
Had a decent storm this morning in Southern Pines. The heavy rain prevented any real good lightning shots but there were numerous cg's to be sure. The main aspect was a bit of flash flooding in the area. FoothillsNC
Hoping it finally rains here today. It's been a while since anything significant. I've only had one storm this Summer that dropped more than 1". And that was July 7th. Lots of nickle and dime events. Large rain masses just don't affect my area. Events this month: .69" .25" .02" .25" Huge rain differences in the last 90 day between the western piedmont/upstate and what happens in the heart of the piedmont near CLT and just east. You go from 4 to 6" of rain to 20"+. Same old , same old...different summer, but the same overall flow and same result. Atleast it did rain some though this Summer. Feel sort of guilty for complaining this year since so many other places are way too dry as well, much worse than me, but my area never gets a Summer surplus. I can't even remember when I've had a normal amount of rain in June through August, but we may get close this time.
