Looking super cold if the long range forecasts pan out! :snowman:

Post some more pics when you get the chance! :)

Yes, you are right.

I like this one for next Wednesday:

Rhavn1682.gif

It may be our first cold wave of the winter, EC, GFS and ECMWF should agree on its arrival, looking now for its strength... -20C for sure, -30C????

Starting tomorrow, we should also get some snow, it will be a pleasure while snow on ground is very poor (between 0 and 3 cm).

This morning, we have temperatures ranging from -11 and -30, now -13.6C in Hidden Valley, around -15C before sunset.

Have a great day !

Been following this bering sea storm for several days now. I follow alaska weather almost as much as i do here (sometimes more when it's slow) so I read their afds almost every day and I've never seen such strong wording from Fairbanks as I have with this storm (which isn't a surprise given how strong it is).

I know this area is notorious for it's big storms and hurricane force gusts are not unusual but Fairbanks mentions in their discussion of winds gusting to 100mph. It amazes me a non tropical low can get to as low as 940 to 945mb with winds that high at the surface. The lowest pressure for an extratropical low btw is 927mb that was recorded at dutch harbor, Ak in 1977.

I saw a 86mph wind gust was reported at nome on the news this morning.

Also saw a story on the aspects of the storm surge and how the lack of sea ice is expected to allow the storm surge to be higher...as sea ice can diminish the potential storm surge somewhat. Amazing storm, wish I could experience something like that.

Good morning from Yukon,

Wow, great storm in Bering Sea. any damages reported?

In Hidden Valley we had -14.5C this night, now -11.6C which is 6C colder than at the airport.

We are expecting some snow by lunch, snowfall should reach about 10 cm from now to saturday morning. Much colder conditions should reach us next week with Lows down to -25/-30 and low highs of -20C.

Winter is definitely here :) !

For the snowfall in direct, link to the webcams of the area.

Have a great day !

At this time of year, sea ice is not usually in the Bering Straits to any degree (even in the 1970's), so I'm not sure what the relevance of that story would be. Another AGW alarm maybe.

20-48 degrees F below normal in 7 days! Watch out! 8-day average temperature anomaly in southern Alaska: 5-12 Celsius.

Good morning,

This now looks like winter:

webcammeteowhitehorse2.jpg

GFS/Wxsim also expects an additionnal 10 cm for this night and tomorrow.

Around the territory, temperatures are raging between -8 and -20C, snow in the south.

Temperatures will start to fall down on Monday, -25/-30 may be expected for Wednesday/Thursday.

Loving it, got another 4-5 inches overnight. Most of south-central AK is in a large deformation zone keeping the snow falling consistently with bouts of shear vorticity generated from the faster westerlies to the south.

Yes they are...about a foot in the past week, with 10" on the ground currently.

A nice early start to winter in Anchorage!

Good morning everybody,

-15.3C actually, 19 cm on the ground, 2 cm snowfall since yesterday.

We should get light snow all the day, tomorrow should be much more snowy and we ay be able to reach the 30 cm on the ground by Thursday morning.

I cross the fingers.

Temperatures ranging from -15 to -35 in the territory, with colder temperatures coming on Thursday.

Here are some pictures of the Takhini River freezing up:

The mixing out of valleys in mountainous regions can be a major pain in the arse since it can result in temp swings in excess of 20-40 degrees. Not to mention how "deep" does the mixing occur.
