as a snow lover i would never have disgust reporting snow, i may grow tiresome of endless cold but snow from late sept to mid/late may (almost 8 months sounds great)

Trust me, I love snow too, but our locale close to the Pacific means there can be awfully long stretches of clouds and rain in the summer (our wettest climo is late summer...but it begins as early as mid June), so combined with a total lack of winter sun, prolonging the winter like this during our driest time of the year is a big blow, especially for outdoor enthusiasts who like to hike (mtns are snow covered still...with mud a likelihood deep into the hiking season). This isn't the lower 48 where you are basically guaranteed a nice stretch of weather in summer.

Well, if summer is short, it might as well be hot, right? (sort of the opposite philosophy I apply to FL winters)

This is kind of old news now.  Fairbanks got to 92 degrees, only 4 degrees below its highest June temperature ever (96) on June 25 and 26 2013. The highest all time temp is 99, so that's still several degrees above the 92 of this year.

Following the recurvature of Typhoon Francisco, we get a huge jet amplification again in the West Pacific, and it looks like both the GFS and ECMWF want to develop an intense low in the poleward exit region by day 7-10. Could get kinda windy around the Aleutians to western Alaska.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
945 AM AKST FRI NOV 15 2013

...A PATTERN CHANGE WILL PLUNGE MAINLAND ALASKA INTO A DEEP FREEZE...

THE RECENT LARGE SCALE WEATHER PATTERN HAS BEEN CHARACTERIZED BY
A PERSISTENT RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE NORTH PACIFIC WITH
TROPICAL-LIKE AIR RIDING OVER TOP OF THE RIDGE ACROSS THE BERING
SEA INTO MAINLAND ALASKA. A DRAMATIC CHANGE IN PATTERN WILL BEGIN
THIS WEEKEND AS THIS RIDGE BEGINS TO BREAK DOWN WHILE A NEW RIDGE
BUILDS OVER THE WESTERN BERING AND EASTERN RUSSIA. THIS WILL SHIFT
THE FLOW TO NORTHERLY ACROSS MAINLAND ALASKA AND MUCH OF THE BERING
SEA AND ALLOW ARCTIC AIR TO PLUNGE SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE STATE.

TEMPERATURES WILL BEGIN TO FALL ACROSS SOUTHWEST AND SOUTHCENTRAL
ALASKA TONIGHT AND CONTINUE TO TREND DOWNWARD OVER THE WEEKEND.
REINFORCING SHOTS OF COLD AIR WILL THEN MOVE IN OVER THE COURSE
OF NEXT WEEK. THIS WILL BE THE COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON THUS FAR.
FOR INTERIOR AREAS MINIMUM TEMPERATURES WILL BEGIN TO DROP BELOW
ZERO BY EARLY NEXT WEEK WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES GENERALLY IN THE
SINGLE DIGITS TO TEENS. FOR MOST COASTAL AREAS MINIMUM TEMPERATURES
WILL BOTTOM OUT IN THE SINGLE DIGITS TO TEENS WITH DAILY HIGH
TEMPERATURES IN THE TEENS TO 20S.

THIS PATTERN LOOKS LIKE IT WILL HOLD THROUGH THE END OF NEXT WEEK
AND PERHAPS BEYOND. CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE MOSTLY CLEAR AND
DRY. HOWEVER...UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES TRANSITING THE AREA MAY
BRING OCCASIONAL CLOUDS AND A BRIEF CHANCE OF LIGHT SNOW OR FLURRIES
TO THE REGION.

This is a top notch thread. I always revisit this every once in a while. Some really informative discussions took place here...the meteorological processes that take place near Alaska are so complex and wonderful to read about...my friend in Fairbanks keeps on asking me to forecast for him and I'm like "WTF?" most of the time! Hopefully the guy in Yukon is still doing well.

Agree - Fairbanks and many other places in AK are challenging to forecast for. Here is a very informative Alaska weather blog that may interest you: http://ak-wx.blogspot.com/?m=1

Wow, that's crazy. 9 degrees and heavy snow, with insane winds.

Yeah, he actually ended up getting frostbite on his finger tips while refueling in the middle of it...he had to keep his car running. It isn't severe frostbite at least...his car was roughed up pretty bad though.
