So close but yet SO FAR....wish I had westerly upper level winds to gain experience in ash forecasting....one of the volcanoes erupted.

AVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Cleveland (CAVW #1101-24-)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH

Previous Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY

Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Previous Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Issued: Thursday, December 29, 2011, 7:55 AM AKST (20111229/1655Z)

Source: Alaska Volcano Observatory

Notice Number: 2011/A7

Location: N 52 deg 49 min W 169 deg 56 min

Elevation: 5676 ft (1730 m)

Area: Aleutians Alaska

Volcanic Activity Summary: A detached drifting ash cloud to approximately 15,000 ft ASL has been detected at Cleveland Volcano in satellite images from 1402 UTC, Dec 29. As of 1445 UTC the ash cloud was approximately 80 KM/50 miles moving ESE from the volcano.

Based on the presence of an ash cloud, AVO has raised the aviation color code at Cleveland Volcano to ORANGE and alert level WATCH.

Satellite data indicate that this is a single explosion event, however, more sudden explosions producing ash could occur with plumes exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level. Such explosions and their associated ash clouds may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. However, in cooperation with the University of Washington, AVO has implemented a lightning alarm system that may detect significant ash-producing events within minutes of onset. If a large explosive event occurs, seismic signals may be recorded on AVO seismic networks at nearby volcanoes. There is no real-time seismic monitoring network at Cleveland.

Additional information on Cleveland Volcano and the current activity may be found at this link:

http://www.avo.alask...y/Cleveland.php

Please see http://www.avo.alask...color_codes.php for complete definitions of Aviation color codes and Volcano alert levels.

Recent Observations:

[Volcanic cloud height] 15,000 ft

[Other volcanic cloud information] detached plume moving ESE from the volcano

Remarks: Cleveland volcano forms the western half of Chuginadak Island, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians. It is located about 75 km (45 mi.) west of the community of Nikolski, and 1500 km (940 mi.) southwest of Anchorage. The volcano's most recent significant eruption began in February, 2001 and it produced 3 explosive events that produced ash clouds as high as 12 km (39,000 ft) above sea level. The 2001 eruption also produced a rubbly lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea. The most recent minor ash emissions were observed in January and June 2009.

While the rest of the US yearns for snow, it's been an epic year so far in Valdez.

SNOWFALL (DEPARTURE)

YESTERDAY 3.7" (+1.3)

SINCE DEC 1 141.7" (+77.2)

SINCE JUL 1 213.1" (+94.8)

SNOW DEPTH 54"

It's been a favorable pattern for them to get lots of snow "dumps"....very often the North Pacific lows have been bombing out as they skirt Kodiak making out as the get south of the Anchorage or Cape Suckling area. The pattern remains favorable with a persistent 500 low that is entering week 2 of it's "residence" along with the cold air. Large area of with temperatures <-30. The station in the upper right that the line runs through is at -43 for their temperature.

Happy New Year 2012 with a lot of interesting weather events !

We now have -21.6C here in Whitehorse, but warmer temperatures should be back tomorrow !

Perhaps some colder conditions after Jan. 10?

To finish this year, here are some pictures I took with my cellphone in Whitehorse yesterday:

i honestly don't think i have the mental fortitude to live in Alaska...mosquitoes the size of elephants, it's either always sunny, or always dark...the brown bears always want to eat you...and it's either way below freezing, below freezing, or freezing...although, i've heard AK has the highest percentage of single men...which is right up my alley!

One thing with the temperature when it's sunny it feels way warmer than what the temp actually is....for instance 65 degrees is actually hot and at 70 you're sweating....because in the spring and summer the sun is at a higher angle....instead of a 38 degree angle in say the central plains....it's at about 60 degree angle so it's "beating down" on you more....when my mom and daughter came up here we were having a record warmth spell of 8 days and it was 65-70 degrees and they were hot as was I. The brown bears aren't that bad....esp if you stay within 50 ft of your car....I have been down at Russel Creek fishing with a bear 150 ft from me doing the same....he looks at me....I look at him....and we each do our own thing....if you sit in your car they will come within 40-60 feet of you then just run by....now the black or polar bears in mainland Alaska....DIFFERENT STORY.

Patrick, do you speak about grizzly or brown?

It looks like this is a grizzly bear on this picture?

About what you wrote, I agree at 100%.

Here in Yukon, it looks like warmer than it is. A +15/+20C is pretty comfortable, a +30C is really hot. It is dry, sun is high in the sky, mosquitoes are not so bad (depends on the year), a moose can be much more dangerous than a bear, light is so wonderful, ....

And I am not a tour operator lol !

Hello everybody,

-0.2 this night, -17.1 this evening, with almost 10C lost in one hour this morning. Burwash even lost 18C in one hour yesterday.

Thermometer is still playing yoyo with no durable winter conditions since the end of November.

BUT, this will soon by a bad memory with the big cold coming on the weekend:

35hpa.gif

The -40's or -50's are likely with such a configuration, specially when the wind will stop (certainely next week). For the forecast, it is here!.

Welcome back to the winter  !

Here it comes, severe cold and then snowstorms for the south coast (of B.C.) across the border into western WA and all the way east to Montana. I think Vancouver Island is going to get buried mid-week once the severe cold starts flowing out of the local fjords. Would expect about 15-30 cms snow in total around Vancouver and 25-50 cms possibly more locally in southeast Vancouver Island. This will play out as sleet or rain at first in Puget Sound but could turn to heavy snow by mid-week there as well. Definitely a heavy snow situation for the local lower elevation slopes (Whistler is already nicely covered).

Severe cold into the BC interior and across western Canada, could reach -45 C or lower in places.

Might reach -8 to -12 C here as well, after no real winter of any kind so far.

Yes, Roger, winter is definitely here or back (for us in Yukon after a beautiful month of November).

Almost all Canada will be shop by this cold snap, we may reach in some places -45/-50.

It seems that for me in Whitehorse, it will be great but not exceptional, but the difference will be significant in some places (Alberta or BC) where you get highs of +10 these past days.

I am also happy because the cold will stay in Yukon more than a couple of days, and we can hope keeping cold conditions for at least 7/10 days...

Good morning everybody,

Cold surprised me this morning with far lower values than expected in the territory:

Dawson -45.3C

Old Crow -43.9

Beaver Creek -43 (do not have the exact)

Carmacks -42.6

At my place -42.1C !

Here are some pictures I took this morning at sunrise, with some ice crystals fog

Just wanted to drop in and congratulate you guys in Alaska and the yukon who are having such an amazing winter. Has been largely a dud for us out east! Amazing pics by the way!

everyday seems like it is amazng where you live, Mt Blanc! do you have any neighbors? how far a drive is it to buy groceries or other things? you take pics from an elevated location, do you hike up,or do you live in an elevated area?

Thanks thebiggrmbalski  !

It is not always like this, but I try to take life as it comes and to be positive...

Our subdivision is 20 kms north from downtown Whitehorse.

My neighbors are 50 meters right and left and 300 meters north from my house. We are not isolated but the land is large enough (4 acres) to feel quiet.

I am located at 660m, but Vista Road is between 770/1070, Fish Lake 1110/1500 and Grey Mountain 870/1500.

The area is mountainous, with big valleys, and peaks up to 2000m.

I've been outside in the -40-50 stuff I wonder if my winter gear would be ok for 5 minutes out in that. The worst part if you are properly clothed is the inner nostrils, and lungs the air literally is so cold it freezes any liquid in your nostrils and will make you cough if you take a deep breath when it's that cold.
