Based on the presence of an ash cloud, AVO has raised the aviation color code at Cleveland Volcano to ORANGE and alert level WATCH. Satellite data indicate that this is a single explosion event, however, more sudden explosions producing ash could occur with plumes exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level. Such explosions and their associated ash clouds may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. However, in cooperation with the University of Washington, AVO has implemented a lightning alarm system that may detect significant ash-producing events within minutes of onset. The pattern remains favorable with a persistent 500 low that is entering week 2 of it's "residence" along with the cold air. Large area of with temperatures <-30. One thing with the temperature when it's sunny it feels way warmer than what the temp actually is....for instance 65 degrees is actually hot and at 70 you're sweating....because in the spring and summer the sun is at a higher angle....instead of a 38 degree angle in say the central plains....it's at about 60 degree angle so it's "beating down" on you more....when my mom and daughter came up here we were having a record warmth spell of 8 days and it was 65-70 degrees and they were hot as was I. The brown bears aren't that bad....esp if you stay within 50 ft of your car....I have been down at Russel Creek fishing with a bear 150 ft from me doing the same....he looks at me....I look at him....and we each do our own thing....if you sit in your car they will come within 40-60 feet of you then just run by....now the black or polar bears in mainland Alaska....DIFFERENT STORY. Here in Yukon, it looks like warmer than it is. A +15/+20C is pretty comfortable, a +30C is really hot. It is dry, sun is high in the sky, mosquitoes are not so bad (depends on the year), a moose can be much more dangerous than a bear, light is so wonderful, .... And I am not a tour operator lol ! Burwash even lost 18C in one hour yesterday. Thermometer is still playing yoyo with no durable winter conditions since the end of November. BUT, this will soon by a bad memory with the big cold coming on the weekend: The -40's or -50's are likely with such a configuration, specially when the wind will stop (certainely next week). Valdez is already the snowiest city in the US (avg 326") yet they are getting record snow for them. Roger Smith Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 Here it comes, severe cold and then snowstorms for the south coast (of B.C.) across the border into western WA and all the way east to Montana. I think Vancouver Island is going to get buried mid-week once the severe cold starts flowing out of the local fjords. Would expect about 15-30 cms snow in total around Vancouver and 25-50 cms possibly more locally in southeast Vancouver Island. This will play out as sleet or rain at first in Puget Sound but could turn to heavy snow by mid-week there as well. Definitely a heavy snow situation for the local lower elevation slopes (Whistler is already nicely covered). Severe cold into the BC interior and across western Canada, could reach -45 C or lower in places. Might reach -8 to -12 C here as well, after no real winter of any kind so far. Almost all Canada will be shop by this cold snap, we may reach in some places -45/-50. It seems that for me in Whitehorse, it will be great but not exceptional, but the difference will be significant in some places (Alberta or BC) where you get highs of +10 these past days. I am also happy because the cold will stay in Yukon more than a couple of days, and we can hope keeping cold conditions for at least 7/10 days... Thanks thebiggrmbalski ! It is not always like this, but I try to take life as it comes and to be positive... Our subdivision is 20 kms north from downtown Whitehorse. My neighbors are 50 meters right and left and 300 meters north from my house. We are not isolated but the land is large enough (4 acres) to feel quiet. I am located at 660m, but Vista Road is between 770/1070, Fish Lake 1110/1500 and Grey Mountain 870/1500. The area is mountainous, with big valleys, and peaks up to 2000m. The worst part if you are properly clothed is the inner nostrils, and lungs the air literally is so cold it freezes any liquid in your nostrils and will make you cough if you take a deep breath when it's that cold.
