I don't know how y'all in AK survive!!! you have bigger cojones than i do, that's for sure!!! That's just brutal. We never got anything that bitterly cold in ND till mid-winter. On the territory, at 9:00 we had: -45C in Beaver Creek (dayly record), -43 in Haines Junction (dayly record, windchill of -46C) and Mayo, -41 in Carmacks and Dawson, -39 in Mayo and Faro, -36 in Burwash (windchill of -46) and Watson Lake, -34 in Teslin (windchill of -43) -29 in Whitehorse (windchill of -42) We now have some ice crystals: Today should be sunny, and a bit windy with a windchill close to the -40s. This afternoon, we got -24C, we hiked in the Fish Lake area. It was magic, with ice crystal and temperatures ranging between -32 and -36C. I will post some pictures tomorrow. Metro Vancouver 9:08 PM PST Monday 21 November 2011 Wind warning for Metro Vancouver continued Southeasterly winds of 80 to 100 km/h over coastal sections of the central coast, north and West Vancouver Island tonight. South to southeast winds of 70 to 90 km/h over Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Southern Howe Sound, East Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, and Southern Gulf Islands tonight. A burst of southwest inflow of 80 to 100 km/h affecting inlets of the central coast Tuesday morning. This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements. Two approaching low pressure disturbances from the Pacific ocean will bring yet another round of unfavourable weather to many regions in coastal British Columbia tonight. Heavy snowfall will continue over Whistler and will begin over Central Coast - inland sections early this evening. About 10 to 15 cm of the white stuff is expected for Central Coast - inland sections while another 20 to 30 cm will likely fall over Whistler tonight. What makes this event so rare is the upper level winds were from the south! These winds were created by the combination of surface pressure gradient (High over the interior, Low in the Gulf of Alaska) and cold air in the Copper River Basin being held back by the Chugach. The Gulkana(Copper River Basin) to Cordova(Along the coast near Valdez) pressure difference was 22mb! To put it into perspective the models were only forecasting 50kt in the low/mid levels that was available to mix to the surface. Essentially a katabatic driven event!
