Only got about a fresh 1/2 inch on top of the inch I had.

It was nice though to wake up to a nice gentle snow.

Perfect for me for Christmas. Easy traveling this afternoon.

Merry Christmas Everyone and lets hope we don't have rain for the Winter Classic.

i got about 1/2" as well.

Apparently I need to move 1 mile north so I can score the big snows like northpit.

I only checked the 6z GFS and it does look so close. 12z NAM though is still well the to east. If the 12z GFS is the same as 6z or a nudge west and the other models are similar we could be in line to get a couple inches. I hope so since my daughter got a new snow suite so it would be great to have a chance to use it.

It's gonna be a tough call on this one. Looking at the WV loop, it appears that everything is a bit too progressive, also the phase will be a little too late for any of the main precip shield to reach this far west.

Although the backside 700mb RH looks decent, so any little bit of lift we do get , should produce something.

how much new snow did everyone get, I got about 3" new snow this morning, nice surprise on Christmas day.

:snowman:

Merry Christmas

Well, no, it wasn't nice at all.

I was up from about 3 til 4, watching the radar, and checking the obs across Ohio. It looked as if whatever was showing on the radar was mostly virga, because only a couple of stations were reporting any precip at all. I woke up at 7, checked the radar again, and had that Oh sh*t! moment, when I saw that green blob over the southern part of the Pittsburgh metro area. Checked the Penndot cams, and saw that it was indeed sticking, and was out the door by 7:15. (In addition to condos, and public sidewalk areas to maintain, I have a couple of church parking lots to plow, and you know, they kinda like to get together for Christmas.)

Obs from AGC didn't show any precip til the 4:53 a.m. observation, so it wasn't like it shouldn't have been a surprise.

Only got another dusting here at home, but I measured 1 1/2" on a car in a parking lot on Mt Washington. Every place else I was had roughly the same.

Breakfast was cold, but the kids were VERY patient, waiting til Dad got home to open presents.

Now you know why I'm sick of the snow biz.

I hope you all like my new signature. :)

Digger,

Just want you to know that what you do is appreciated. Unfortunately, all to often we forget to say so. So here's a toast to those who rise early to scrape the roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. WE APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND THANK YOU!

Thanks, Mrs H.

Merry Christmas to you too.

This morning, while I was shovelling a sidewalk on a corner of Carson St on the southside, I happened to glance up just as a police car was passing by. The officer must've already been looking over at me, because our eyes met for a brief moment, and he waved to me, and I waved back. Two guys, in very different professions, both out working on a snowy Christmas morning. I hope he felt as uplifted by that brief exchange as I did. (And they're the guys and girls who really deserve the thanks, because they, along with firefighters and medics, are putting it on the line all year long...)

Winter Classic (to which I have tickets).....CANCEL

From what I've been reading today, it seems that they might be OK with the forecasted temps as long as it doesn't rain. They played an outdoor game in Vegas once in 85 degree heat. The rain is the biggest concern, because it'll freeze when it hits the ice and make the ice surface uneven. Plus, if they can't do it Saturday, they'll try it again Sunday. Looking at the models, the front might move through Sunday morning cooling things off. It's close though.

K guys...really quick, just wondering what your most memorable snowstorms are. I am 25 to put things in perspective

1. Feb 5-6 of 2010....sure, 93 was more intense, but I couldn't fully appreciate it. Really, I will remember the whole month to be honest.

2. Mar 93...I may have been young, but I do remember the only time I saw true blizzard conditions here.

3. Jan 94 Distinctly remember the weather channel showing West View on the national accumulation map.

4. Jan 96

5. Halloween storm...don't remember the year, but was awesome to trick or treat in 6 inches of snow.

My list really widdles out towards the end...just goes to show how few truly big storms we get

I think I can help here as I am a few years older than you...I can remember the late '70's winters....awesome is about the only way to describe them. But back to your question, each one of these events were pretty cool, you forgot Feb. 2003, to me was the best.Maybe you didn't mention it because Pittsburgh had like 15inches. I had just a shade under 30 inches from that storm. The gradiant was crazy for that storm as I am about 60 miles south of Pittsburgh and received twice as much as the city. The Halloween storm was Oct 1993. The stretch of winters from 1993 to 1996(with the exception of 94-95) were very memorable.

1. Jan. 4, 1994....I picked up 27" of snow in just one day where I lived in southwestern Westmoreland county. The most snow I've ever personally witnessed from a storm. Most of it came during the day which made it that much more enjoyable.

2. Mar. 13, 1993....Picked up approximately 20" from that one. I say "approximately" because that snow was hard to measure with all the drifting.

3. Feb. 5-6, 2010.....Picked up 20" from this one as well. I got stuck trying to make it home and spent half the night at a Shop n Save with no power. Eventually made my way home and couldn't make it back to get my truck until the following Monday. The weather enthusiast in me still enjoyed that one though.

4. Presidents' Day weekend, 2003....Picked up 18" over a 2 day period that weekend. Wasn't a heavy snow but a nice prolonged event.

5. Jan. 1996.....Picked up 16" when the forecast was for only 6". My friend and I went to the movies that evening. We did donuts in the parking lot when we came out. Lol

6. Dec. 1992....Picked up 16" from that one as well. We didn't do too well with storms in the 80s, and I was too young to remember anything from the 70s, so this was probably the first storm of over a foot that I got to enjoy.

Well, based on pictures and testimonials, I would have to say the Thanksgiving snow of 1950---the year I was born! The city was really crippled, but it brought the best out in people; neighbors helping neighbors. Two brothers, home on leave from the Navy, shoveled neighbors out and did grocery runs. Those were the days, my friends!

Something interesting to watch about 8th. Watch the modeled progression, nice energy tranfer to a low coming in the OV.

This thing has been hanging around in some form since yesterdays 18z gfs.

The 0,6, and 12z have kept the 500mb vort up north and progressive, but the past two 18z runs have wanted to dig the vort down into the OV.

It's still a year away ( haha ), but it is in the ballpark to keep an eye on.

I'm not even thinking about the 7th right now. Hell, I just have to worry about getting through this week, before I can think about anything concerning next week! And I take nothing seriously past a week with those models anyway.

agree for sure, the GFS model will have that storm gone in a day :arrowhead:

Well for New Years Day, looks like just enough moisture may come up in the upper ohio valley and western pa to support a threat of some strong storms possibly with a low threat of wind damage or tornadoes, and back end snow at night

Nice to see Jan 1994 getting some love. Definitely a forgotten storm by most, since March 1993 was only 10 months earlier. I was in Williamsport at the time and "only" got 14"....but saw 5.5" fall in one hour. Amazing.

1993 is still the greatest storm of most of our lifetimes.....but Jan 1994 is a textboook case of "how to make it snow big in Pittsburgh"

http://www.meteo.psu.edu/~gadomski/NARR/1994/us0104.php

Here is a Denardo Youtube clip. He actually at one point was saying the airport total of 15" was incorrect due to "compacting" and the must have at least 18". His totals map is pretty impressive too.

I was smack dab in the middle of that 20"-26" area! I measured 27" total and I know some areas in Greene and Fayette Counties got over 30". I wish someone had weather channel footage of this one as well. I liked the weather channel's maps back then. I had tape of this one but it got erased.

....and it's not even a "top 10" storm due to that airport total.
