With that precip shield moving in i would be concern for freezing rain/sleet/ and snow on the eastern side of the storm for most of the Pittsburgh Area because the temps haven't rose out of the 30s and temps are already starting to drop, temp at my place is 34 F

Locally should just be rain with some sleet possible at the onset for a short time. Taking this morning's sounding and modifying I definitely can see some sleet, but with the warm ground not expecting any road problems.

At this point I'm not very excited for much of anything. I really doubt any accumulation is likely, and I'm not completely sold that it will snow at all in the immediate Pittsburgh area. As of now it appears the cold frontal passage will be around daybreak on Friday morning, with moderate to heavy rain on-going from the overnight period. With the frontal passage, a lot of the lift and deep moisture will be quickly leaving the region, suffice to say it looks like the cold air aloft and especially at the surface may be just a bit too slow for a quick burst of snow locally.

It's early but models are showing first snowfall next Wed-Thurs.

Models have been consistent for 2 days now. We all know how quickly it can change but something to keep an eye on.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Sounds interesting. To be honest I haven't even really been looking at the models yet but I guess it is about time to start.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Glad to see some people made it over...do you guys think rants comes back now?

In any case, it was one of the most miserable thanksgivings I can remember, though the fairly extended period of sleet the night before was a nice little surprise....however, no wintry precip this morning was a downer though, as I was hoping for at least a few flakes to get me really into that christmas spirit!

Longrange looks pretty boring on the GFS...12z has a clipper around day 9 or 10, but nothing else really...GFS has been showing a pretty big cold snap though mid month consistently, with the -10 line dipping pretty far south, and I am ready for that, even if there is no snow! Maybe we can get some LE snows!

BTW, who watched the Pitt game today? What a freaking dissaster!

Indeed this was a nice surprise. At 8am, I managed to measure barely measurable snow, a tenth of an inch, on a snow board near Allison Park. There was a brief period of snow pellets that helped me reach this first accumulation of the season!

Just wanted to give my thoughts on this upcoming storm...

While most of the storm is obviously going to be rain, I think by the time Wednesday night comes around, the precipitation is going to be changing over to most, if not all snow. This is because the cold air will be coming in quicker than the precipitation can end.

Looking at the 850 heights and temps at hour 66, the freezing line is in central PA leaving western PA cold enough for snow. (indicated by the blue shade)

post-1742-0-53003300-1291001058.jpg

When you intersect the area cold enough for snow with the 700 mb RHU, you can see that it should be snowing in western PA during that period.

post-1742-0-40731500-1291001104.jpg

If everything lines up right, then we could be in for a quick burst of moderate snow right after the frontal passage on Wednesday night perhaps leading to 2-4 inches of wet snow.

Looking at the 12Z NAM and GFS for Wednesday, things still look a bit interesting as far as us maybe getting our first accumulating snow of the season once the front moves through. It'll be interesting to track the next couple of days. The heavy amounts of rain we get before the changeover may cut down on accumulation though with a very soggy ground initially. The cold air has to hit us rather quickly if we're going to see anything worth noting in terms of accumulation. Otherwise, it'll just be some scattered snow showers on the backside.

I am looking at the clipper-like system moving down next Monday or so. Looks like it is getting stronger run to run. A ways out but something to watch.
