wxeyeNH
Wow, there is almost no precipatation across Texas. I thought that even if this thing was sheared apart there would be at least some good rain bands in S Texas but just nothing!
dan88
Well, so much for Don, vanished as it got to land. Radar estimates 10+ inches of rain off shore, with very little on land.
wxeyeNH
How does that much QPF fall apart in 2 hours? Is there something wrong with the radar site or did the storm fall apart that quickly? I don't remember seeing something fall apart that fast.

I don't remember seeing something fall apart that fast. Yes, the radar malfunctioned and accidentally vaporized Tropical Storm Don. In reality, it just went poof. Scott747
This could be one of the greatest disappearing acts for a 'tropical storm.' Ever.
matthewweatherwatcher
One hell of a dry air mass over Texas destroyed Don. With the flight level data only supporting 30 knots or so with 1006-1007 millibar pressure this likely is a depression.

HurricaneJosh
This could be one of the greatest disappearing acts for a 'tropical storm.' Ever. It really went poof! Just bizarre. It didn't even leave much of a pressure trace. The apparent center passing by didn't even lower the pressure below 1009 mb-- like a tropical wave passing through. Wind can't be over 10 kt right now. jasons
I've never seen anything like this, and I've been watching TCs carefully since 1984.

I was driving back and forth twice this evening from Kingsville to Riviera and didn't get enough rain to clean the dust off the windshield. I was in a heavier shower at 10:30 this morning up in Rockport, than any that came ashore with Don's landfall. Damn! we sure needed some rain. The only happy people are the cotton farmers who haven't gotten their crop harvested yet.
Solak
LOL --- Cantore on Twitter... JimCantore Western part of circulation center with #don coming ashore near Baffin Bay. This thing died faster than Chesney's and Zellweger's marriage
CooL
wow, whata weird storm that never got its act together ..Does Don go down in the list of storms that weaken dramtically before making landfall somewhere along the gulf?

hurricaneman
This look like what happened with the tropical cyclone that made landfall in the persian gulf, just evaporated due to the dry air. Is it a possibility Don pulled this because of the same circumstances in Texas, because this thing just went poof at landfall
CooL
wth happened to it was it moving too fast to allow itself to stack? it never really got that true cyclone look. More like a complex of intense thunderstorms with heavy rain

HurricaneJosh
I'm still puzzled by the IR images, which suggest moderate-to-heavy rain has been falling here for hours. There has been no such thing. We got a trace of rain here-- it was not even a measurable amount. The windshield never even got totally wet. We used the wipers twice, maybe. LakeEffectKing
The more we watch these>>>>>the more we learn>>>>> the more we are humbled. Can't say as that I've ever seen a precipitaion field in a tropical system collapse as fast as what has occurred this evening. Close the book on Don.... Self analysis of my call... Track forecast?..... good. Intensity forecast?....poor. What I envisioned tonight to be (even as late as last evening)?? Not even close! On to 91L!!! Amped
It encountered dry air from the east and from the west. It was also appeared to deform from it's circular shape into an elongated troff You can see the center again now that there's clutter.
