Typhoon Tip
Statement as of 2:29 PM EDT on July 23, 2011 ... Record high temperature set at Kennedy NY... a record high temperature of 102 degrees was set at Kennedy NY today. This breaks the old record of 100 set in 1972. 102 today with no sunshine! Who knows how hot it would have been with a full sun! The heat is remarkable, yes ... buut, it's sunnier than that. Hi res vis imagery shows that any clouds are transient and that sufficient sun is getting through.
Logan11
Same here ...muggy but unremarkable temperature. 85/70 now. Only one 90+ which was 93 on Thursday. No official heatwaves here in 2011 probably. The above said - this does not feel like a cool place because I have only one shade tree and it doesn't shade the house - otherwise all open land/full sun end to end.. Joe could sunbathe on my creek and be eaten alive by mosquitos. 84.3F here. Underwhelmiing heat wave fail
Logan11
I recall that day in July 1977 when Central Park had the last 104F. I was actually in Germany visiting family and read about it in the International Herald Tribune, we all dreaded the return to that junk. The blackout hit NYC also then. Then the day we flew back into JFK a strong cfropa was underway and it was violent with lots of CC lightning strikes visible from the plane. That was the end of most heat for that Summer as the whole pattern flipped. Statement as of 2:29 PM EDT on July 23, 2011 ... dendrite
Nice recovery today after the AM clouds/rain. Temps aloft with some sun/mixing supported the quick rebound although it kept everyone from reaching the century mark. MHT and ASH hit 96F and 97F respectively on the hourlies. Who knows how hot it would have been with a full sun. Yeah...like John said it looks like it was mostly thin cirrus in the peak heating hours based on sat and obs (25kft layers in the METARs). Optically thin cirrus still let a lot of the incoming shortwave radiation in from the sun while they will still readily absorb the outgoing longwave radiation from the earth and then reemit that back in all directions. The net result is still strong heating at the surface. I've read some articles that state they actually enhance the heating a bit even over clear skies. dendrite
TAN has made it up to 87. Bit of a bust by BOX the is AM when they had me forecast for 98-99F. They mentioned in their AFD this morning that there was high bust potential in temps in E MA given the rain/clouds so they weren't completely caught off guard. ASH was 73F at 10am, but still managed at least 97F so it was probably smart to not panic too much over the slow start for the CWA. Of course it was different for your area with the later clearing. You win some and you lose some I guess.
A-L-E-X
Yeah...like John said it looks like it was mostly thin cirrus in the peak heating hours based on sat and obs (25kft layers in the METARs). The net result is still strong heating at the surface. I've read some articles that state they actually enhance the heating a bit even over clear skies. That's really interesting! I was wondering about that too, because I noticed that once the skies cleared out the temperatures haven't actually risen-- they stayed the same or fell a degree or two. We had some mid level clouds move through earlier in the day, but they were out of here by 1 PM or so, and right after that the big spike in temps occurred with the higher overcast, like you said. The skies cleared out completely around 4, and since then the temps have stabilized for the most part or dropped a couple degrees. Insolation plus insulation gives us a hotter result than a clear sky would.
Mr Torchey
Temps slipping back now 94 another perfect evening, nice west breeze and the back deck is in full shade so my irish wife can deal with the heat, of course the frozen marg helps!
weatherMA
High of 94F here. Heat wave was just as I suspected. 93/100/94. Dew is 68 so it feels pretty hot. ORH hit 89 at 5. I just hope they got up to 90 so the heat wave is verified there as well. 90/

powderfreak
From the NNE thread, but figured some in here would be interested in these obs... Official heat wave at the ASOS stations in Burlington and Morrisville-Stowe Airport....with Montpelier falling short today. Last 3 days are below. Interesting that the three sites differ by almost exactly 400ft in elevation with BTV the lowest and MPV the highest. With that almost equal difference in elevation, you can see how the high temperatures vary by 2-3F with each 400ft elevation gain. Textbook dry adiabatic temperature changes between the three ASOS stations up here. Also easy to compare them because they are all out in the middle of an airport field, and not shaded by trees or other influences like a lot of private home weather stations. BTV (330ft)... 97F, 95F, 93F MVL (730ft)... 94F, 93F, 90F MPV (1,165ft)... 92F, 91F, 87F

Not bad, not wonderful. Good December/January/March, awful February. I remember the bitter cold of January. The original Steve's had just opened in Somerville...ice cream. On a near 0 night, there was a line out the door. I have to look at other factors and in fact the spring is a poor analog as it was VERY hot in April followed by freezing of the magnolia blossoms a couple of weeks later. HarveyLeonardFan
Where's the relief?? It's after midnight and the dew point is still 70. Enough already. Central air is a must because even down here there are a good 25 days a year when you really need it. It's 76 in the house downstairs and since my bedroom upstairs is the hottest in the house the temp is 85. I was surprised how cold the water was late this afternoon. It was a refreshing 66, but considering all the heat we've had I thought it was going to be at least 70.

And the Mention of those TSTM's in NY state. I can vid record it and then post on the board. You will hear the Audio. 100F heat. On the hour Obs for comparison sake. I also have Bruce Swoegler and Don Kent on tape two days in the February 1978 Blizzard 2/6 and 7.. I can Vid record some of that and put that on in the winter.. say December or so.
