Mr Torchey
We've been down into the 20's as early as 8/22. By October we'll have had multiple nights below freezing. Summer doesn't persist here through September like it does in southern states like Alabama and CT. The 28.5 temp threshold was met as early as 8/22. 24.5 has been met as early as 8/30.

ski MRG
[[/quote Was that by design or pure happenstance ? A little of both. I grew up in Columbia County,NY (county bordering Betrkshire County on the West). I met a girl from Northampton when I went to college (Simon's Rock early college in Gt. Barrington), I graduated at 19 and we immediately moved to Chesterfield for the flyfishing and snow. She's been replaced but this place has been the perfect place for me, remote by east coast standards, lot's of snow and great outdoor activities, kayaking, skiing, fishing etc. Alaska is where I hope to retire to. winterymix
DCA hit 104 yesterday. DCA is +4.9 for July 2011. Normal is hot. Those departures are infernal. Historically, approximately six times during historically hot mid Atlantic summers, in August, sharply cooler departures have developed. In those years, by coincidence the blast furnace heatwaves have broken just about the time of the Pleiades meteor shower on August 11/12. Think of 1930 1936 1939 1980 1988 2010 At BWI, this season there have been 8 daily highs of 95 to 99 and 5 daily highs of 100 and above. Logan11
I knew a girl named Cari that went to Simon's Rock about the same years ...83-86 period probably... later transferred to SUNYA and was in my history and archives program. So long ago..... LOL Gorgeous day here with sunshine , mid 70s and dew point hovering in the mid/upper 50's. JB now says "not" a hot August north of I-70 in the Midwest and East. Cooler than last year. [[/quote Was that by design or pure happenstance ? A little of both. I grew up in Columbia County,NY (county bordering Betrkshire County on the West). Logan11
There is a difference in perception about later winter (Feb/March) versus later summer is because we measure winters harshness as much by snowstorms as we do by bitter cold. More often than not the best snowstorms are after February 1st. Whereas summer is pretty much measured by the heat intensity and in my area over to NE - the worst heat almost never comes after about August 10th. So we tend to notice the increasingly cool nights as August progresses and that becomes the theme. . It's also gotten up to the 60s in January, before. As soon as the end of January hits I'll be sure to post how winter is ending and summer is taking over. It was probably in the 50s here and I had the A/C on.
