No chemicals its all food-type ingredients. All of them are listed on the side of the container. I wouldn't advocate anybody dumping chemicals right next to their vegetable garden. All organic in mine at home. Home made compost. My cukes and tomatoes and such will never know the taste of Miracle grow.

Yeah I am all organic...I use kelp and manure for fertilizer, and I also have my own compost I'm working on. I have been harvesting a ton of eggplants (Japanese and Black Beauty) lately as well as a few ears of corn and a bunch of tomatoes, and just got an uber-zucchini 2 days ago with 3 more on the vines. My pictures are posted in the Photography thread. I made Eggplant and Zucchini Parmesan with ingredients pretty much all from the garden last night, was amazing. I also have a huge patch of baby arugula about ready for harvest, something I had a ton of in the spring but went without for the last few weeks as I was trying to get a fresh bed prepared. BUT the raccoon is devastating my main garden, been eating things, knocking off tomatoes, just generally creating a lot of havoc. I am going to try the peppercorns for tonight, but I think I am off tomorrow so I will begin the trench. It is a difficult spot because the garden is narrow with a fairly steep drop down to my back patio on one side, so it's hard to find a good spot to work. Nevertheless, if I am going to get any vegetables, I need to have the fence be tight as possible.

Rain seems to be over for now. But looking at the regional radar some pretty good storms seem to be crossing over the Canadian border towards NY state. They look pretty robust for this time of night. I wonder if they stay together or fall apart as they get closer.

Lmao... I wish i had a chance to try that one out when I was trying to get them out of the retirement communities dumpster. Although come to think of it that's probably why they were in the dumpster to begin with. Feasting on Depends and Assures....

LOL, very funny but true

Zucker-dawg, did the degree while working... state school for undergrad (env science) and grad (middle school Ed)

Can't believe they pay like that. That's too much IMHO.

I had a 94 Protege

This wx is dull, but beats the heat

Yeah, I have been trying to find a public school district that will hire me on the condition that I do my certification/Masters while working, but it's not so easy right now. Really not a lot of need for schools to sponsor certification when there are a good variety of experienced, certified teachers looking for new jobs with the budget cuts in major cities like NYC. I've been expanding my search out West where the population is growing faster and foreign languages are a bigger priority/shortage area, but still not getting a lot of bites on my resume. I'd love to start at 35-40k/yr with a school district that pitches in for my cert, but I doubt it's going to happen given where the economy is today. At the school district where I subbed, there were 450 applicants for a 5-month permanent substitute position. Even though I'm fluent in both French and Spanish, and know some German, and have some education courses on my transcript, I am still not getting many calls. Hence why I am so excited about the private school offer.

I'm not sure it's too much...teachers should be paid well. It encourages quality, otherwise intelligent individuals will seek other professions if salaries are not competitive. Should there be a stricter evaluation/tenure system to ensure that the money isn't being wasted on long-serving teachers with poor performance? Absolutely! I also believe that property tax financing is a drain on our society, both reinforcing a cycle of poverty and stressing some areas excessively, so I'd like to see a federal financing system for teachers' salaries as other countries have. However, I think having most top salaries in the 70-120k range is pretty fair. Life is expensive here in Westchester...gas is still $4.10 a gallon, the cheapest houses are 350k, heating and cooling bills add up with the volatile climate, etc.

I love Mazda Proteges. When I was 18, I got a '91 Protege 5-speed manual from my dad, he'd been keeping it in the garage from when he used to drive it. I loved that car to death, clutch was smooth as butter, but it died at 175k. Now I'm driving a 2000 Protege automatic, which still has the great signature steering but I miss the stick-shift. Luckily, my dad loaned me his Honda Fit 5-speed this week for the trip down to Baltimore and the interview, so I get to fool around with the manual and enjoy the good A/C and XM Radio.

You could probably get a job in the city without a masters.... My cousin teaches at a magnet school in Brooklyn ...but I'm sure most public schools in NYC are unpleasant..

Finally getting dew points down into the mid 60's in parts of central to northern NY....

Awful time of the year. You open the door with a light on inside and the whole menagerie of hundreds of bugs storms in! Death to all of them in about 60 days when the freeze happens. ;)

Love my Mazda 3

Rain about done. Bugs going nuts in the porch lights

As far as lessons learned, the kids are awesome, never underestimate how weird people can be, there is no money for supplies, adults can make things crazy, and use the bathroom whenever you get a chance. And pack a lunch

Yup, these are things I've noticed subbing. Brown-bagging is definitely the best option for a busy teacher, although subs can usually sneak out for a period or two when they don't have class. As soon as I started as a substitute, my mom gave me a large travel coffee thermos and told me it would be my most valuable possession as a teacher. LOL. She worships hers.

I have started applying the charter/magnet schools in the area like KIPS. They are a bit stricter about the Masters these days, although it depends on the area. Unfortunately, New York State is eliminating the foreign language Regents exams, which means there is much less pressure on schools to offer less popular languages like French. For many years, all foreign language students needed at least two years to graduate HS, and 3 years plus a passing grade on the Regents to get a Regents Diploma, which helps with the state school admission and scholarship. However, the State didn't have the money to keep publishing the foreign language Regents, so the exam is a goner. I'm not a big fan of standardized testing, but this definitely hurts my job prospects. My mom's French job may also be eliminated, something that Mount Vernon has threatened several times. She has her tenure, but they can close down the French program and fire her if they need to.

How does it compare to the Proteges in your opinion? Does it still have the Mazda signature precision steering (rack and pin)?

I always thought the handling on the Mazda was amazing. My 1991 Protege was just ridiculously smooth, almost never stalled on even the toughest hills, and got like 30-35 mpg. I really like my father's car now, the Honda Fit is pretty peppy as a stick-shift, and it's getting about 37mpg with combined city/highway and heavy AC usage. This includes my using it for delivery work, which is not fuel efficient at all.
