The last 60 days of rain to normal across the region...nothing we don't know but we're getting into a pretty rough spot in terms of crop moisture...lots of browning starting to take place on corn out in Chester and Lancaster Counties...happened to be out that way last night and the edges of the corn were starting to brown up a good bit in some areas.

We typically need about an inch of rain per week to be "normal" locally -- we haven't been there for the most part since March...we had a 3" rainstorm in April but other than that and July 8th's storms most of South Central PA and the far western burbs (on west) have been dry, dry, dry.

That maps says it all. Yes, its only the past 60 days, but it has been a very dry 60 days for those of us NW of the immediate Philly suburbs. There are atleast several of us here in that boat.

Just over 3 inches of rain in nearly 60 days.

Pretty crispy here in Lebanon County....any corn that was planted a bit late due to the wet April-early May period looks awful...worse than right after last year's 100 degree days...and we're just beginning this heatwave. Some fields of soybeans are really starting to show some yellowing as well. Our last significant rainfall was .45" on June 22, and we've had absolutely nothing since July 8. With this week's heat we will probably have some patches of grass die off completely like last summer.

The dry ground should make 100° an easy target tomorrow and Friday, maybe Saturday.

You're not kidding. Driving down from Manheim this morning and some of the corn looks pretty bad.

that's odd, I was just posted in a different thread how the corn looked good near Bird-in-Hand, Pa compared to further east.

It looked like sh*t near Elverson yesterday...near Elizabethtown yesterday evening it looked better than in Elverson. Probably soil type playing some role in addition to localized rainfall?

No question. I was in Leola Monday evening and the lawns there looked like it hadn't rained in weeks. I'm 4 miles south of Lancaster and my grass wasn't to bad until this week and now it's looking like straw.

As expected, Chester Co. squarely in the 'abnormally dry' category. Surprised there are no D1 areas showing up yet

in northwestern PA where it's even been a little drier. Likely we'll see some of that next Thursday as prospects for

widespread rain seem nil at this point.

  • 3 weeks later...

Desplite siginificant rain in the last week, half of PA is now under moderate drought, up from 0% the week before,

including a good portion of Chester, Montgomery and Bucks counties. It does look like we'll have sufficient rain

over the next week to prevent a worsening.

shockingly, i didnt know se pa was in a drought watch.

They were put in one last week or the week prior when the pattern has shifted out of drought and to rainy. Didn't get that...it was reactionary considering the upcoming pattern was much more wet.
