Mr Torchey
87 sunny Another perfect day, its getting ridiculous actually. Hung out with the kids over in Southport in the tidal flats, water was crystal clear, warm and the breezes were beautiful, if you dont like days like today, there is something wrong with you. Damage In Tolland
LOL, gotta love the diversity in these threads. Logan and MRG liv e in some fantasy land where the heat never comes..it ends Friday when in reality it's a 7 day torch into next Monday..and the rest of us live in reality which says torch
ORH_wxman
Upper 80's in our BY's is a torch when BDL is 90+. It's relative We saw multiple 90s last year and in 2008. We haven't had a true classic heat dome in here yet though that certainly might change later this week. BDL hitting 90F is like a +4 or +5 so using them hitting 90F is a terrible proxy for true heat. We don't claim to be in an ice box in the winter when ORH has a high of 27.

I certainly don't think it's been a hot summer, but I also wouldn't say it's been cool either. We'll see if that changes a month from now.

The high at BDL was 93 today. The only way you accomplish that is when you have a torch airmass overhead

The only way you accomplish that is when you have a torch airmass overhead That's not entirely true. The airmass really is not exceptionally hot, but we have a strong downsloping component to the wind. If we had s-sw winds and accomplished this...it would speak volume to the airmass. I certainly don't think it's been a hot summer, but I also wouldn't say it's been cool either. We'll see if that changes a month from now. Departurewise, it has almost been as hot in BOS this July as last year's true torch. +2.9 vs +3.3 last year. But I think that is more due to higher mins...but I could be wrong. Warm, yes, a bit.... not hot, but this week will be hot for almost everyone

The only way you accomplish that is when you have a torch airmass overhead No its not. We get about 3 90F-less summers every decade, maybe like 3.5...its about a 1in 3 shot to avoid 90F for us. The word "torch" loses meaning if you refer to every single positive departure airmass as a torch. We generally use departures of double digits in either direction to refer to torches or frigid airmasses. At least thats what most of us have used. The Euro shows a torch, but BDL hitting 91F is not a torch IMHO. Today is certainly very warm but true torch stuff is still off to our west. Some people just like to use those words I guess but they lose any meaning if you use it all the time. It was the same in winter when people claimed a 37F high in February was a torch...when it was like a +4. I'd say the same thing to people who claim a 28F high in January is an frigid airmass. I think BOS seabreezed a few days last year which really skewed the daytime high as well, so it may be a bit deceiving. I'm just going by June 1st until now. CoastalWx
ORH last July +3.9, +2.6 so far this July... Yeah see the interior baked last year. I always hear on air mets talk about how many 90 degree days BOS had last year, and it's deceiving. You go 5 miles from Logan, and there were probably 8 or so more 90 degree days. CoastalWx
I don't think anyone would claim 28 in Jan is frigid..But I think most would say 90+ is a torch But think about it....a +5 departure is a torch? The number "90" I think has some sort of mysteria around it. For some reason 89 is not a big deal and then all of the sudden 90 degree is like another threshold. I think 90 is hot but I just don't view it as a torch.

moneypitmike
Hopefully the heat forecasted for later on will become muted over time. Meanwhile, 84.0/62 off a high of 84.1. Nice in the shade in any case.
dendrite
92/55 here... there's no other way to put it... TORCH With the LM50s dews it didn't feel that bad. It's hot in the blazing, cloudless sun, but there's nothing oppressive about this airmass. In fact, it feels pretty nice with the winds. Today felt more typical of an early May 90+ day than one of your HHH July heat waves.
