100 Degree Or Higher Heat Signal For Our Area This Week

I would think the heat index at the very least will still exceed 104 for 2+ hours especialkly if were starting at 90 degrees! So thats why I'm surprised they didnt just continue the heat warning. I'll take their word for it though

I sometimes wonder if KPHI and KOKX are on different wavelengths.

The amazing thing is this heatwave and even the heat that is going on in the Plains is basically a result of pure buildup...we've seen these sort of temps before at 850mb and 700mb but never gotten this warm....the combination of relatively dry conditions as well as very warm ground temps over most of the central U.S. is whats ultimately adding 5-7 degrees to the temps we'd normall see in this setup...even KS and OK is seeing highs of 105 with 850 temps of 22C...that is unheard of...even adding 18 degrees to those 850s only gets you to around 99-100.

Well Upton is predicting a high of 104 in Newark with a maximum heat index of 108 for tomorrow. Yet the heat advisory is in effect with the wording "heat indexes up to 100" and "Heat advisory issued for heat indexes 100-104 for 2+ consecutive hours". What is the exact criteria for heat warnings? I'm assuming its heat indexes above 104 for a couple hours which I don't see being a problem. The heat index is 98 at 4am!

still hasn't dropped below 90 at Newark.. unreal.... i'm down to 76.. 4 degrees cooler than last night.

Newark dropped to 86 at 6am. And back up already at 88 7am. I think they will see 104 today. More clouds today and slightly lower 850mb temps today than yesterday.

Today feels anticlimactic since almost no one should hit their highs from yesterday. Bring back the 80s and low dews!

Temps won't be quite as hot. But some places could still break their records for today:

LOCATION.......RECORD...YEAR....FCST HIGH...FCST MAX HEAT INDEX

NEWARK..........100.....1955.......104..............108........

BRIDGEPORT.......94.....1972**......99..............103........

CENTRAL PARK.....99.....1991.......102..............106........

LA GUARDIA......100.....1955.......102..............105........

JFK.............100.....1972.......100..............105........

ISLIP............95.....1991........99..............103........

Does being out in 100 degree temperatures cause the body internal temperature to rise causing an induced fever >98.6? Isn't internal body core temps above 105 extremely dangerous for human system? How do people survive in 105 temps for more than 15 minutes?

You dont sweat?

It raises temperature, but

It won't induce fever as if you had the flu.

What it does it actually start to sweat more to cool the

Body off. You're body keeps sweating until your core temp drops. However, as ambient air temp rises , sweating becomes less effective and

Your body starts to overheat.

Heat stresss can just you becoming tired, sweating excessively and substantial thirst, increased heart rate red sweaty skin.

Heat exhaustion Is when your body starts becoming overheated at at risk situation. You'll start to have headaches, muscle cramps severely, fatigue, cool -clammy

skin, increased heart rate and blood pressure, nausea and disorientation and fainting.

Finally, Heat stroke. The most dangerous heat condition. As your body becomes so overwhelmingly hot, your body starts to shutdown. You lose the ability to sweat, you can/will go into cardiac arrest. You're brain can become brain damaged due to the loss of fresh blood supply.

You dont want heat stroke. It can kill even the healthiest of person at any age.

All this is based on variables such as age, genetics, health, body type, fitness level, etc... Different people will feel these affects at different durations of exposure. Some people can take the heat longer.

Know your body's limits and know the signs and symptoms of the above mentioned effects and act accordingly.

(sorry for any mis spelling, on ny iPhone.) if you're asking how I know, it's because I'm firefighter/emt. Or I just slept at a Holliday inn!!

Hope this helps.
