green tube
105 at Trenton... holy crap! 1 shy of the all-time record! if you look at central jersey historically, 102 F .seems to be a temp rarely exceeded. hightstown, for example, up until today, it's hit 100 F. at least 29 times, but only 5 times has it been 103 or higher. What happened in July 1936 to get them to 110? And NYV to 106? I wish someone had some maps (850 preferably ) of that day!

ict1523
It is interesting to see lows like that here as it is quite uncommon but there is really nothing enjoyable about that unless you have a romantic night swim thing planned lol (or perhaps he wants a monthly weather prediction to come to fruition, lol) Whether the low is 75 or 85, it is still insufferable. So might as well keep Central Park's low at 84, so we keep our daily average of 94 and a departure of +16. It looks more impressive.
tmagan
here's what SPC has for their map.. a bit hard to read, but basically in that 23-24C ballpark... The corresponding surface temps do make sense with these 850 temps.. 24C mixed down dry adiabitically to the surface puts you pretty much right at 100... tack on a couple of degrees for a good synoptic west - northwesterly flow which adds some downslope and there you go... and for Newark.. tack on an additional, extra 5 degrees just for being Newark. Part of this is where the air mass originated, which is undergoing severe drought, which allows the air mass to be warmer that otherwise would be. mike2010
I heard it's official now. the 108. (good, no conspiracies to worry about...) Considering Trenton hit 105 before the storm rolled in, it all seems legit.

tornadojay
piece of new upton discussion: DANGEROUSLY HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH THIS EVENING WITH HEAT INDICES OF 105 TO 110. NUMEROUS RECORDS HAVE FALLEN ACROSS THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON WITH NEWARK ESTABLISHING A NEW ALL-TIME RECORD OF 108...AND BRIDGEPORT THUS FAR HAS TIED THERE ALL-TIME AT 103. ALL THE MAJOR AIRPORTS EXCEEDED THE CENTURY MARK. AN ANOMALOUSLY WARM RIDGE ALOFT COUPLED WITH VERY HIGH DEW POINTS...GENERALLY IN THE 70S...PRODUCED THE HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY OVER THE REGION TODAY. THE SOURCE OF THE HOT AIR HAS BEEN ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS WHERE A STAGNANT RIDGE ALOFT HAS ALLOWED FOR THE HEAT TO BUILD OVER THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS. AS FOR ANY THUNDERSTORMS WITH THE INTENSE HEAT...AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION ALONG THE SEABREEZE FRONT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS...OR ACROSS NORTHERN NJ WHERE THE INTENSE HEAT MAY BE ABLE TO BREAK THE CAP. THERE WAS A LONE CAP BUSTER ACROSS CENTRAL NJ WHICH HAD NECESSITATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING. ANY CELLS THAT DO DEVELOP WILL BE STRONG TO SEVERE WITH ALL THE AVAILABLE POTENTIAL ENERGY...CAPES RUNNING 2000 TO 4000 J/KG. MCS OVER LOWER MICHIGAN IS FORECAST TO DISSIPATE BEFORE REACHING THE AREA LATER TONIGHT. THIS WILL BE WATCHED CLOSELY SHOULD THE COLD POOL WITH THE CONVECTION BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN ITSELF FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME. SOME MID AND HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS MAY BE ALL THAT THE AREA SEES.-- End Changed Discussion --
Isotherm
I dropped to 93F via cooling from the T-storm passing well south of here. Amazing to drop that much without a drop of rain, shows how hot it is. Alex, that 107 looks like Eatontown, but I doubt its legit. Most highs in Monmouth have been 101-103. dbc
Some town in Central NJ I think-- Ray mentioned it earlier. Looks like Marlboro, just southwest of Holmdel. It could be Eatontown as Isotherm mentioned.
Isotherm
Looks like Marlboro, just southwest of Holmdel. Definitely a false reading, I recorded a high of "only" 100.5F here in Colts Neck, the town immediately east of Marlboro.
Sundog
Some town in Central NJ I think-- Ray mentioned it earlier. On the day after the hottest day of the 1930s from when no records still stand, just a few miles south of Newark where they recorded a high of only 103. Call me skeptical lol. pazzo83
MAJOR train delays between New Haven and NYC, wires are down on the tracks. I'm stuck on an Amtrak train in New Haven right now, we've been here for about an hour and a half.

I grew up in Howell. My parents lived down there for 30 years. Was at Delicious Orchards for the first time in years last Saturday actually. It does indeed look like a bogus reading.
