ag3
So the only way to impress you is to have the hottest summer on record? Do you only get impressed when we get 20 inch snowstorms and up? Do you say to yourself that 15 inch storms are a dime a dozen? The all time record high is 106. Anytime you come within a few degrees of that is impressive. Btw no one was 105 and up last year unless you're referring to the desert southwest. Last year was a historical year with the insane amount of 90+ degree days. Someone posted a stat yesterday and to date last year has more then triple the amount of 90+ days thru yesterday.
ag3
NYC hit 100 multiple times last year and I don't care what the CPK max temperature readings were on the hottest days of the summer from 2005-2007 but in each summer the hottest day was 98 so just shy of 100. I was in Central Park all three of those years on the hottest day of the summer and anyone telling me it didn't break 100 was not out in it. Did NYC, LGA or JFK report 100 degrees last year? dbc
most NYC stations are likely to have 3 days over 100, with ewr possibly hitting 105 If that is the case then I agree, impressive. Also no one was referring to Newark in the post I was replying to. No doubt Newark is spitting back super hot readings day and day out for quite some time now this summer. That is very impressive. We were talking about NYC.
dbc
Did NYC, LGA or JFK report 100 degrees last year? That is bogus that not all stations did and everyone here knows it.
NorEaster27
Did NYC, LGA or JFK report 100 degrees last year? JFK did 3 times in July, almost 4. We won't do it with this heat wave but the dews are much higher this time around. LGA and CPK did it twice in July, falling one degree shy of 3 and 2 of 4. http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=okx

dbc
if the nam is right newark could come within two degrees of it's all time record. no big deal. Again I am not talking about Newark. I have agreed already that Newark's readings have been very impressive.

Hold on so you mean to tell me that you were physically able to distinguish between 98 and 100 degrees? You "felt" that it was clearly 2 degrees warmer than what thermometers were reading? Anything less than that I enjoy but are more common than 6 inches+. We rarely go through an entire summer without at least one 95 degree reading or higher. When we don't get that hot it is a freak occurrence a la 2009 but plenty of times we have more commonly gone through winters with no snowstorms meeting the WSW criteria. ag3
EWR, NYC and LGA all broke 90 again today: 2pm: EWR: 88 (high of 92 so far) LGA: 85 (unsure) NYC: 88 (high of 90 so far) JFK: 84 (high of 86 so far)

BlizzardWarning
Maybe some folks should wait to see what happens. The temperature could easily hit a 100 for three straight days, which I personally find impressive. However, the set-up will result in extremely insufferable conditions, despite wind direction dictating temperature. If we see a southwest flow, we might see dewpoints in the mid to upper 70s with temps mostly in the upper 90s. On the contrary, if we see a dry west or northwest wind, temps will easily reach 100+ for NYC and Eastern New Jersey, but dewpoints will remain in the upper 60s to low 70s. When will we know the direction of the wind? We might not know until the night before the event, or the day of the event. However, I don't think any meteorologist doubts the potential for this heatwave to produce record-breaking temperatures if the right conditions are met. It wouldn't be the frist time a heatwave has overperformed or underperformed.

I personally agree that it needs to be 3 days of 100+ in a row or 3 to 4 days in a single week for me to really be taken aback. That is just me and my preference. I experienced that last year IMBY and that is memorable for me. Others can feel free to hype this heat wave up and laud it as much as they like. I choose not to as I feel I have seen this type of stretch plenty of times over the years and especially in the last 5-10 years save for a cooler summer here and there. I look at the overall picture before throwing the historic word around. JULY 15th 1995 was the single hottest day in my lifetime in my 44 years on earth.I will never forget that day as long as I live.We have had hot summers,we had the hottest summer on record last year which is also memorable,I am not downplaying it.I hit 100+ 3 times last summer so that was historic.Yet nothing has even remotely challenged the conditions on that day. Maybe this upcoming heat is not impressive for YOU,but it IS impressive for NYC.

earthlight
I still cannot believe there is an argument here. NYC going over 100 is a big deal. What happened last summer has nothing to do with setting the bar for expectations of a major heat wave. The average amount of days where NYC goes over 100 is so small that it is significant whenever it happens. Sure, maybe it's not earth shattering. But I don't consider any temperature event "earth shattering". That term is ridiculous for this conversation. Wait and see is a good mindset to have. But to say that the NAMs advertised ~102 degree high would not be significant is pretty silly.
