lol That was in reference to some of Scooter's posts referencing how hippies tossing frisbies in Boston common during the winter enrage him....no serious generalization.

I know, Scooter wants to shove sticks in the spokes of bike riders and toss Hippie's frisbees into the river. It's funny, he seems so even tempered. That's what they always say about serial killers too though, "he seemed quiet and polite."

I tell ya what.....I'm hankering for a snow storm like everyone else. But, I'm happy to have wintry temps. I 'd much rather have a big snow storm in the works, but I can be contect--at least for a while--with just having good winter cold.

Meanwhile, wind's are cranking out there this evening.

22.8/15, gusts up to 27, light snow.

I can put it down anytime I want......just one more storm , then I'm giving it up for good. Some good things are coming soon, I'm thinking we head back toward favorable solutions as we get in tighter.

Soon they are gonna be smoking what we have since April, seeing more and more converters.

True but if the teleconnections extend upstream far enough to get cross-polar flow sustained, it'll be a replenishing cold cold winter

Yeah I think the cold air will keep flowing into Canada due to the amplified Aleutian ridge that is helping cut off the Pacific jet and bring some northerly flow from the North Pole into Canada. La Niña years tend to be much colder up north anyway, so I'm not too worried. This isn't your traditional GoA low either; there's definitely a bit of a +EPO pattern but there's a Rex block associated with the GoA low that is allowing some higher heights to punch into northern Alaska and the Beaufort Sea, bringing the cold air into North America. We saw a similar pattern emerge in December 2007 although there was more of a SE ridge.

This picture shows how the cross polar is pointed at Europe and not us. Blocking is helpful but a more cooperative Pacific could make things historic in NOAM.

I think that ridge amplifying in Kamchatka/Bering Strait towards the North Pole is going to knock the cold air in the Canadian Archipelago farther south into the continent. That -AO would be pretty nice for keeping Canada chilly, so I wouldn't get too worried about the brief interruption of cross-polar flow.

Didn't get my first real event of the great 2008-09 season (82.5" total) until Dec 17 (2.5"), so as frustrating as it has been missing out some more, we aren't even off to a slow start yet.

If were at the end of the month sitting in the same position now (which I don't think will be the case) than it will be time to start worrying...it's still just too early.

Why?, still 10-12 weeks left by then. I just do not get it.

If we get very little for the whole month of December, that is a very bad sign.

Obviously still plenty of winter left after that, but it would take a very big stretch to catch back up.

Meh, not your youths Nina, we can make up quickly, it's possible to trade Dec good for March good as much as that sucks for snow cover fetishes.

The database is ridiculously small. See my post above. AO baby AO, baby You will see.

Yeah I think the ENSO/monthly thing is a bit exaggerated. December tends to be the coldest month in the more recent La Niñas but we've only had 10 moderate/strong Niñas since 1950 so the sample size isn't exactly impressive, and some winters like 1973-74 had February as colder. Also, cold sometimes means suppression for New England so a bit of a SE ridge building in later in the winter might not be a bad thing after all. It's going to be an unusual pattern with the blocking for sure.

Pats having their way in the early going...

Looks like the Jets are moving though.
