I'm at 90.3. Nothing has even come close to that 2 day broiling we had in middle June.

I'm still at 94.1 at my home in Astoria.

Dew is high, but it's not terrible outside.

See, I'm slowly but surely converting you both to the heat side :P

To be fair though, it would have seemed hotter in June anyway, the first bout with heat is always a shock to the system.

I'll never be converted. I hate heat.

I'm in beach mode now though, so I'll take some heat. Wife enjoys the beach so as long as she's happy, I'm good.

If I had a choice, it would be 60-65 all summer and then a frigid winter with tons of snow :)

lol would you believe I keep the heat on until the high temps are in the 70s at least, but we can definitely agree on the second part :)

the run is also essentially dry through day 10

That's key and will be why I think we get to 100+ with the stronger surge of heat.

It got to 98 with ease here today, even with the partial cloud cover. Dry ground is key.

We need the rain dude I don't like the ground conditions right now.

If only we can have a good dousing of rain once a week and the rest of the week was bone dry.

Yeah I can live with that-- we basically had that tail end of last week and the next day it zoomed up to 92 here. It's so dry that one day of rain makes it feel better but doesn't really alter the ground conditions which dry up again very quickly.

My garden badly needs the rain; I've only recorded 0.54" rainfall this month. And it's really starting to show, too. Even the massive, seven-foot tall corn plants needed water today, and my flowers are wilting terribly. All of the tomatoes/peppers I have in containers took an incredible amount of water when I went in with the hose today....My gardens are pretty hard to water since they are so spread out, and this is really becoming a problem. I am going to have to go back and water everything tomorrow, again. It's going to become a lot worse in the next week with highs in the upper 80s, constant sunshine, and WNW winds drying out the soil even further.

Another oppressive night, 83.4/70 and clear. Can't wait for a real front to get in.

I forgot to water my hydrangea yesterday and the leaves were already showing signs of drying up this morning. I have to liberally water all my plants or else the soil hardens basically overnight making for poor conditions and headaches for me.

Well, if you run out of vegetables, you could always go to Shop Rite

Yeah same here, close to 3" for the month of July. Grass has been growing so quickly that its a jungle 3-4 days after cut. But it'll start to slow down now if we remain dry for 3+ days.

What can I say? The temperature is the temperature. We only got to 92F here.

I was always a bit skeptical of the upper 90s forecast with 850s only around 18-19C. Living outside the majority of the urban heat island, and not measuring on an airport tarmac which is totally inaccurate, you generally need 850s of 22-23C to flirt with 100F.

I wouldn't say inaccurate, it is representative of that immediate area, but I do agree that 850's need to be quite a bit higher for more suburban/rural locations to reach 100F. My high was also 92 today, much lower than the 97.3 I recorded in the early June heat spell. IMO we have a better shot at longer lasting, more intense heat in the Jul 20-30 period as 850s of > +20c become widespread across the east. This afternoon featured cooling 850s on a downsloping NW wind which will suit urban zones fine, but elsewhere we need the mid level heat support to get extreme readings.

METAR reports give temperatures to the tenth place holder.

ASOS METAR reports are programmed to do one of two things:

The hourly ob has the temperature reported in Celsius degrees, but to the nearest degree Fahrenheit (or as close as a conversion with one decimal will allow).

SPECI obs (in between the hour) will only have the temperature to the nearest degree Celsius. This may appear to be a report to a tenth of a degree accuracy in Fahrenheit, but its not.

Here are the obs from TEB today:

I just hope that longer duration heat also features downsloping west and northwest winds :)

And well ahead of every other station region wide (save for Newark of course, duh.)

what time did Newark hit 99?

CLIEWR listed 222 PM, so 3:22 PM EDT. Now, another wierd aspect of the CLI is that it reports the LAST time the temperature was reached, not the first one, so 3:22 PM was the LAST time it was 99 degrees. It may have been 99 earlier (in fact it probably was).

Ray can you extract the highs to the nearest tenth of a degree for both Newark and JFK? That would be interesting to find out. Was the JFK high between 3 and 4 also?

ASOS doesn't report temperature to the nearest tenth. In fact, the reported "temperature" is actually a 5 minute average of the temperature, not the instantaneous reading.
