snowman21
BDL down to 40.5 inches of snow?? What the.. that can't be right.
WeatherX
Sure to be a source of much controversy. I am still amazed that our government can't produce data in an easy to read format......I do like the ever increasing snowfall totals though...... ORH_wxman
BDL and ORH have some really contaminated data in the early 2000s. They had some in the late 90s too, but it was a bit less evident since it was only a few years. Now they have added a few more years of contaminated data while getting rid of the full data set from the 1970s. I get roughly a 45" average for them in the 1981-2010 period estimating the snowfall in the 1997-2002 period. I was pretty conservative in the estimates. Using the 30 year means though at BDL and ORH are useless since the datasets are incomplete. BOS and PVD should be ok though...except I think PVD might be incomplete in 1997-1998...but only one year and a lousy one at that shouldn't affect it too much. CapturedNature
Thanks Snowman for posting these. Can anyone re-enlighten me on why climatic normals are only taken from the last 30 years? I'm trying to remember back to my climatology class a Lyndon w/Dr Berryman and I remember having a discussion about this but I don't recall the details. I have 27 years of data and am wondering what to do after I pass 30 years. I calculate the normals every year and they are pretty smooth without too much change from year to year. I guess my question is, why wouldn't you want to have a longer window to smooth out the decade long rhythms of warm/cold & wet/dry? Thanks.
I get a 67.5" 1981-2010 annual average snow for ORH when using the full data missing from the late 90s and early 2000s. This is still below the longterm mean since 1950 (69.7") because the prolific 1960s are taken out of the equation but its a definite uptick from the 1971-2000 mean of just under 64" replacing the 1970s with the 2000s. tamarack
I cant wait until we replace the 80s lol. Solar min through 2023 so we should have some decent snow years to come. I'll sign that! 1981-2010 added a fine decade (91.6" Jan. '01-Dec. '10) but dropped an even better one, 98.6". Getting rid of Jan. '81-Dec. '90 (78.6") will have to wait another 10 yr. Some of the northern Maine numbers demonstrate (IMO) that stations are measuring very differently. CAR at 109" is a foot higher than either Ft.Kent or Allagash. When I lived in FK, 1/1/76 thru Oct. 85, we had more snow than CAR in most storms, and carried visibly higher snow depths. As one traveled north on Rt 161 and reached the watershed change between the Aroostook and the St. John, one could almost immediately see higher snowbanks. Lest folks conclude that the 70s and 80s data was contrary to the 81-10 averages, CAR averaged 119.6" from 75-76 thru 84-85 while FK had 101.8" (all by my UCC data), for an even larger difference than for 81-10. I'm relatively sure that, 1: CAR sweeps at 6-hr intervals and, 2: FK measures whatever is on the ground at 7 AM, regardless of what settled or melted during the previous 24 hr. They often lockstep daily accum with daily change in snowdepth, and since most snow there is powder-on-powder, that ignores compaction of the pre-existing snow. Rant over... I think a devoted weenie kept that site going because the snowfall data was pretty good. We still have the Ashburnham site for a very devoted snow record keeper. There's actually a new Ashburnham site that has been around since 2009....so we have two sites there now.

ORH_wxman
What about all the years that the Logan observer just stuck a ruler in the tarmac. Thankfully it's been corrected but that has to effect things. Yeah I'm sure it does effect it. ORH's listed normal includes years like '97-'98 which are in the database as like 4.9" for the season...so some of these are useless. BDL the same. We discussed it near the beginning of the thread. At least BOS has a full dataset even if some of the measurement earlier were questionable.

At least BOS has a full dataset even if some of the measurement earlier were questionable. With the new methods of computing normals, I wonder how complex the QC is. Prior to the 1981-2000 set, things were computed pretty simply. Most of the elements were just simple averages outside of degree days and temperature which have used special methods for the last several sets so you could envision low ball totals really contaminating things. Now even something as simple as number of 90 degree days has a fairly complicated derivation method. I'm curious as to how much, if any, of the bad data gets rejected through spatial and temporal analysis and integrity checks, and instead of 30 years of snow totals going into ORH's or BDL's normal maybe only 20 or 25 years makes it in (or less in which case they switch to a pseudonormals computation method). It's tough to say what gets in and what doesn't, even with documentation and provided data sets there's no way to know what was used in the actual calculations. Furthermore we have no way of knowing how much of the change in the normals is due to the change of computation method. What if the roughly half foot change is due in large part to the computation method difference as is the case with the 90 degree days?

Well its hard to endorse a method of computation if the listed mean is as far off the "actual" mean that we see with BDL and ORH. They are both like 3-4" off (possibly more for BDL). BOS seemed to be very close as their actual mean was 44.0" but the listed mean was 43.8". So I suspect contaminated data is in the BDL and ORH datasets. PVD is a little off too but not by a lot. Their actual mean was 35.5" and the listed is 33.8".

CapturedNature
I know that the normals are computed differently now, but one of the things to keep in mind is that these are annual averages as opposed to seasonal averages. I've noted in the past that the sum of averages for every month is less than the average of the past 30 seasons. Not sure why, but that's what I've seen.
