bluewave
I just wanted to put together some winters since 2000 that featured intervals of blocking along with neutral or weak ENSO conditions. While it's still early, the long range ENSO forecasts are currently in the neutral or weak La Nina category. While the sample size is small, the three major blocking episodes since 1960 featured some degree of blocking into the third winter. These blocking episodes were 1963-1965,1969-1971,and 1977-1979.Our current major blocking episode began with the winter of 2009-2010.So if these analogs hold some similarities to the current episode, there will be periods of blocking for the coming winter. I wanted to use winters back to 2000 which reflected the current snowy phase along with recent temperature patterns. These dates were around the blocking phases during those winters. December 2000 was the coldest December in NYC since 2000 with a -6.2 temperature departure. The snow highlight of the month was the 12.0 inches recorded In NYC and around the region on the 30th.March 2001 was remembered for the snow or lack of it depending on your location.Parts of Suffolk County picked up 16 inches.NYC finished the season with 35 inches of snow. January 2004 was the coldest January in NYC since 2000 coming in with a -7.4 temperature departure. It was remembered for 8 days with lows in the single digits along with two 1 degree lows in NYC.These were the lowest readings since 2000.NYC picked up 42.6 inches of snow that winter. January 18-24,2005 was the coldest week in NYC since 2000 coming in a at 17.1 degrees.March 2005 was the coldest inNYC since 2000 with a -3.1 temperature departure. We were able to finish up the season with 41 inches of snow at Central Park. The February 11-12,2006 record breaking snowfall in NYC made the whole winter.NYC recorded 40 inches of snow when the season wrapped up. February 2007 was the coldest February in NYC since 2000 with a -6.4 degree temperature departure. The season was mainly remembered for the Valentine's Day sleet and ice storm.NYC only picked up 12.4 inches of sleet and snow that winter. The temperature departure during January 2009 came in at -4.2 degrees in NYC.We were able to close out the season in NYC with 27.6 inches of snow.
