RobertSul
Time to get overly excited over that 1 degree Well, a lot of times you see how many 90+ degree days a city has achieved in a summer via an official report, and that creates some sort of hallmark of how hot a summer is. Have yet to see one of 89+ degree days, so yes I do think the 1 degree difference in this instance matters.

Especially if you have a blisteringly hot month that tempers your 90 degree totals upward. Its kind of the same principle if the winter is front or back loaded with snow, and ends up above average. Does that mean the winter was harsh and snowy? Not necessarily.

Hoosier
Oh man I hope you don't blow up because you fell 1 degree short of 90. We only had about 90% of our possible sunshine. What a depressing day.

Does that mean the winter was harsh and snowy? Not necessarily. You can have a Summer that's full of warm and humid days in the mid to upper 80s with lows in the 70s because of high dewpoints. Then, you can have a Summer with lots of 90s and lower dewpoints. I would bet the public would consider the high dewpoint summer more of a "hot" summer than the frrequent 90s with low dewpoints. I've already heard people saying how last Summer was so much warmer than this Summer but in reality, this Summer up to this point has had many more 90 degree days than last Summer to the same date. The difference is that last Summer had many high dewpoint days and very warm, muggy nights. This Summer is actually quite different than last Summer but still above normal to date. What if you had twenty five 89 degree highs and only one 90 degree high, would that make it a cool Summer? Of course not. So, I guess I agree with you. Btw joking aside, it has been pretty sunny as of late other than just some fair weather Cumulus. Night time temps have been fairly pleasant too. roardog
On a bit of an off topic note. We are really into the heart of severe weather season here in the north. I don't know why the northern posters get so bent out of shape in April and May when the southern Plains into the Ohio Valley is getting the severe weather. I'm glad we have the severe weather in the Summer while the areas that get hit in the Spring are usually just hot and capped this time of year. Every season has interesting weather around here. I like that.

I agree, last summer was quite hot, but more of a persistent muggy hot, versus intense 90+ heat followed by respites of normal. Cleveland didn't have an extraordinary amount of 90+ days last year either, but we did break the record for the most amount of 80+ degree days in a year. If we're going to have a hot summer, I would rather it be like this Summer so far. The heat comes in spurts with very nice comfortable weather mixed in. Also, the persistant cold fronts make for severe weather chances to make things interesting. I also like how there have been a couple of what I would call very hot days. This is better than persistant upper 80s with 75 degree dewpoints. Really, mid 90s are rare around here, so getting that hot is kind of interesting just because it's sort of rare. It's like having highs below zero, it's rare in Michigan, so it's kind of interesting when it happens even though in both instances it's terribly uncomfortable outside. River Card
Hit 90 for the 9th time this year here. Here are some 90F stats for ORD and SNW... Wow more 90's than this time last year...wouldn't have thought, last year seemed so hot (and it was) . Great stat thanks.

cyclone77
Have had 11 90+ degree days here this season so far. Definitely more heat this year compared to the last several years, but we've only had a few days that felt oppressive. Been a great summer for swimming, barbequing, etc. Last summer wasn't quite as warm, but sure felt considerably more humid. I remember we had what felt like weeks and weeks last summer with dews at or above 75. Still a looooooooooong way to go though, so we'll see what happens. baroclinic_instability
Haha, not good to see it off that early in the run. Haha yeah agreed, not that it matters from a forecasting standpoint as one can NOWcast, but one immediately questions how accurate the future prog will be if such a significant rain event is not being accurately modeled. The cascade effect may be rather significant.

BowMeHunter
Nice and toasty for the middle of the country in the extended range euro.. Lets get them 100's up here and do it right if its going to be hot and crush some records. It's gotta be getting real dry back home. Was gonna cut the grass before we left last weekend but figured it would just burn up if it didn't rain and I don't think it has and its going on two weeks now with no rain. Hoosier
Monday looks like a potential 80 degree dewpoint day around here. GFS is spitting out low 80 dewpoints with mixing not looking all that strong/deep ahead of the front. I'd probably play it safe and go 79 for now. Chicago Storm
Today was the 12th consecutive 80F+ day at ORD (streak started June 26th). With the pattern in place, it looks like that streak may continue for at least the next 7 days (depending on precip chances). If you remember back to last year ORD had 46 consecutive 80F+ days, which ran from July 2nd-August 16th.
