I think we're toast! That outflow boundary cooled the atmosphere....and nixed our instability I think....Just as it was slowing, I got one good little 5 minute shower accompanied by one rumble of thunder before it sunk to my south and intensified in bigger storms...Think you can stick a fork in today...North Ga is probably done!:lightning: Hope I'm wrong.

Good call. Doubt anyone in the Atl metro sees much of anything tonight. I was hoping for another round of storms before the dreadful heat wave comes this weekend. :gun_bandana:

I have a question and it may sound stupid but here it goes. I keep hearing about a cold front moving through, yet the air behind it will be warmer. So why wouldn't it be called a warm front ? If the front is bringing in warmer air I don't see how it can be called a cold front.

I'll take a stab at this. If someone smarter than me has anything to add, feel free to do so.

By definition, the air mass behind the cold front is cooler than the air ahead of it. However, through time that air mass is modified by the environments through which it moves. In the summertime, this generally results in pretty weak cold fronts (there really aren't many strong temp gradients in summer to begin with). Typically, you have sinking motions (cold/dry air sinks) behind a cold front which results in adiabatic warming, which if strong enough, can pretty much counteract any cold air advection which has taken place.

I totally missed out on this mass of developing convection. I hate missing the big widespread masses, however I've done great with neighborhood-sized cells, so not complaining. Its getting dry again so I wouldn't mind one big dumper before the heat and dryspell sets in for a while.

I don't know how we managed to do it, but here in Union SC we managed to miss out on everything the last couple days and this evening the radar is lit up like the 4th of July but nothing falling from the skies

When the development began, I noticed a swirl in Southwest NC, and that worked east, which developed a line of convergence just east of the Upstate to here...it happens a lot as I'm sure you've noticed, and usually that convergence really piles on the rain to our immediate east. Draw a line from Hickory to Gastonia to just north of Columbia and thats a zone that racks up in this kind of flow.

we have racked up the rain since last night. We had between 3-4 inches last night and probably half inch so far tonight.

Yeah, I think I pretty much pissed mother nature off. After all my bellyaching we finally hit gold. Before tonight I've had right around four tenths for the month of June. 2.24 as it stands now with light rain expected for the next hour. My garden is rejoicing. This is actually the first night in a long long time that I have not had to water.

We had .65 of rain up here in the Jonesville area tonight from 2 storms that formed after I though everything was done for the evening. Was glad to get the rain and glad we missed the severe storms today too. Not looking foward to the heat though.

the re-development just keeps on right over me, but only sporadic. Looks like a couple miles east of here is where its been a big time rain event, in Gaston to Meck. counties. Some parts of Gaston have over 2.5" so a few more hours is possible there and points east. Enjoy it while you can.

I'd think somewhere in the piedmont between Athens or even central GA and Greensboro a mass or several clusters of thunderstorms could still develop this evening.

didn't work out for western SC or eastern GA but the piedmont of NC is getting raked tonight. Over 5" in parts of several counties between CLT and GSO, and even up to 8" in southeast VA. I'd love to see that much rain at once. Its been many years since I've had anything like that. Faye brought 7" over two days.

Glad you got some up your way, could hear the thunder from those 2 you had and did cool us down but my lawn grass is now turning brown for the first time this year.

Besides the CAP in N GA after the morning hours, the other very interesting obstacle to any development came in the form of a fairly dense high level cirrus/stratus layer which really hindered any sort of convection. I flew around the north side of the meso mass in MS/AL this afternoon(DFW-ATL) and on descent into ATL it was really obvious that along with the CAP, the blow off from the storms in central AL really snuffed any chance at anything getting started in N GA today. Its cool to witness this stuff from an airborne perspective at times. Being able to see a large area from the cockpit really helps put things into perspective that are difficult or impossible to physically see from ground observation.
