thewxmann
Never heard this word used in an MCD ever. Heck, I haven't even seen that word before. I suppose its the alter-form of dilation?
k***
Typhoon tip is writing MCDs now.
AtticaFanatica
If your flow is one of pure deformation (no vorticity and no divergence), the axis of dilatation is the axis where air parcels are being stretched relative to their width.
baroclinic_instability
Never heard this word used in an MCD ever. Heck, I haven't even seen that word before. I suppose its the alter-form of dilation? As Attica mentioned the axis of dilatation is part of deformation flow and it is quite a common synoptic flow pattern both at the surface and upper levels commonly associated with frontogenesis through deformation. In fact the frontogenesis equation has components due to horizontal deformation.
baroclinic_instability
Here is an example from this winter--yellow is the axis of dilatation and you can also see how a frontal could be enhanced (frontogenesis):
thewxmann
Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the explanation (and the illustration, which was very helpful).
mayjawintastawm
Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the explanation (and the illustration, which was very helpful). Or would that be "explanatation" and "illustratation"? (sorry, couldn't resist)
