One record that I think is safe is the 22-day average high of 97.4 set during July 19-August 9, 1930. That period featured 11 days that reached at least 100.

That record did indeed remain intact, as for the 22 days ending yesterday, August 8, 2011, the average high temperature was "only" 95.7. However, I believe that we did establish new 22-day records for high average minimum temperatures of 77.7 and for high average temperatures of 86.7. In contrast, the 1930 heat wave produced 22-day average minimum temperatures of 73.5 and average temperatures of 85.5.

Euro tries to build up some heat by D10 in the center of the country, but, you know, day 10. We are definitely taking a break, and will be fighting climo soon.

im sure we'll get another little taste at least but i doubt we pile on many more 90/95+ at this point.

The thing that makes mid August bearable (usually) is that we know that Summer's leash is short. It may roar with impressive heat stunts on a particular days or even a couple of days, but more and more, the heat will not be prolonged. The seesaw pattern is about to begin wherein the heat will not be relentless and unabated. Cool respites will start to punch into the heat's territory, and more and more, the cool will be more frequent and stronger.

Yesterday's surprisingly hot day revised the 22-day record for high average minimum temperature to 77.9 and for high average temperature to 86.8. Interesting that this 22-day span ran from July 19 to August 9 because those were the exact dates of the 1930 heat wave that set the high maximum temperature average of 97.4. Also, yesterday marked the 24th consecutive day that the average temperature in DC was at least 80 degrees. The previous record for consecutive days that averaged at least 80 was, I believe, 22 days during July 25-August 15, 1980. We might make it to an average of 80 again today to make it 25 straight, but that will clearly be the end of the line.

Famous last words -- the 80 degree average streak lives, at 26 days. Can me make it 27 straight today? Only if we crack 90 on the high side.
