Eruption of Nabro Volcano in Eritrea

Recommended Posts

All one would need for a rough estimate of plume height is the ir temp of the plume, an emission coefficient spectrum for volcanic ash, and a sounding in the region. Here's the sounding, from across the red sea in Saudi Arabia: http://weather.uwyo.edu/cgi-bin/sounding?region=africa&TYPE=TEXT%3ALIST&YEAR=2011&MONTH=06&FROM=1312&TO=1312&STNM=41024

Anyone got the other 2?

I think the sat24 site has infrared imagery.

Is this the main show or could these be smaller eruptions leading up to a larger one? Since these are such remote volcanos how much do they know about them and do they have monitering(i.e do they know how much pressure is being released) capabilities at these volcanos?

Zippy on the monitoring. Other than famous/unusual ones that erupt all the time like Erta Ale, they're barely even visited by Western geologists. Eritrea is even worse than Ethiopia in terms of access difficulty.

Doesn't VAAC still attributes the eruption to Dubbi?

As of 12z, yes, so I understand your skepticism. Their charts are only showing the plume to 45kft. I've not seen any better estimates. From what I can tell from soundings, the tropopause is at 55kft.

So clearly it's a VEI4 then based off the equation. Now the question is, Is the SO2 reaching the stratosphere and according to VAAC it's not.

Well based on the error bars, there's a chance it's still just a VEI 3 so far.

In any event, it's not Pinatubo - yet.

What's a rector scale? :devilsmiley: Richter scale FTL!

That pic is of the volcano in Chile. I doubt there's a cow, a tree, or a power transmission line within 100 miles of Dabro.

FWIW, here's the original link - they claim this is a photo of the eruption in Eritrea... it's from Iton Gadol News: El Judio Mundo - in espanol!! :guitar:

It's definitely a mislabled pic of Cordon Caulle in Chile. Ever popular for tornadoes and hurricanes, now it's volcanoes.

Parts of western Eritrea may be verdant, but the eastern Eritrea is a hellish moonscape.
