winterymix
Here in NW Baltimore County, the thunder and lightning began around 4 AM and then our area lost power for two hours. A good soaking, though. The trees are greened up now. So far, this summer seems very typical for Maryland.

BethesdaWX
Pssh, ended up in the dark for most of the earlier morning, apparently it was a transformer or something since they were working on the line, pepco had over 2000 people out earlier. I'm sick of losing power every other day it storms, last summer basically did it for me. Needed the rain though, and most of the area got over 1". Ground Soaked it right up. freestater
What causes thunder to have such a wide variety of sounds? Last night I heard several variations of rumble, pop-booms, and hollow sounding noises that were almost like listening to thunder through a seashell. Topography and distance affects the sounds greatly. It's very interesting.

freestater
Topography and distance affects the sounds greatly. It's very interesting. I always assumed that the sound generated was uniform across the length of the bolt, but this must not be the case.
