...and unfortunately, this was associated with a single engine plane crash with a fatality yesterday afternoon near Watkins- in this morning's Post - as well as a brief closure at DIA. Hopefully this afternoon's storms will be spectacular, wet, and harmless.

Agreed.

Looks like a dust storm towards the east right now. It's partly sunny here at the moment, but looking towards DIA the visibility is pretty low with all the winds from the storms out that way.

After July 1, it was not quite as the GFS MOS had predicted for FNL (I think). July 2 was moist- we had a dew point of 60.

It was 90 or better for the last 7 days at Greeley (GXY). Greeley airport is typically somewhat hotter than a number of our other cities around here, it tends to be around 99 when weather observations are 94-96.

I think we will get a few days of thunder and rain with some sub-severe wind and hail. Shear looks to be about 30 knots or slightly less for most of this week, so severe chances may be limited.

The Boulder/Denver NWS office issued a flash flood watch for the areas east of the mountains today.

Sure has been wet the last 3 days. Got caught running up Deer Creek Canyon (Jeff Co Open Space) today. Lots of lightning and rain, not much wind. I might almost recommend being miles from civilization in an open area during a thunderstorm. It was quite exhilarating. (Just kidding, not a good idea)

Unbelievable monsoonal flow lately. It's like we have been living in the tropics or something the past 4-5 days. I had four separate thunderstorms hit my area today - never seen that before. And Tuesday is looking like it could be really crazy.

.LONG TERM...HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL BE OVER THE SOUTH CENTRAL U.S.

INTO THE LATER PART OF THE UPCOMING WEEK. THIS WILL KEEP A LIGHT

SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT OVER COLORADO. AIRMASS WILL BE QUITE MOIST

MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUE OF 1.0 TO 1.5

INCHES AND DEW POINTS IN THE 50S TO MID 60S OVER NORTHEAST COLORADO.

AIRMASS WILL ALSO BE UNSTABLE WITH CAPES OF 500-1500 J/KG. A SHORT

WAVE WILL PASS OVER THE AREA TUESDAY. PUT THIS ALL TOGETHER AND

TUESDAY IS LOOKING LIKE THE DAY WITH THE MOST THUNDERSTORMS AND THE

GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN AND LOCALIZED FLOODING. STORM

MOVEMENT WILL ALSO BE ON THE SLOW SIDE...SO A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MAIN

EVENTUALLY BE NEED FOR TUESDAY.

Had a massive thunderstorm move through the metro area the past hour. DEN recorded a gust to 66 mph.

I'm kind of concerned about some training cells in the foothills west of Fort Collins...very heavy, and if they persist much longer, there could be significant flash flooding up there.

Flash Flood Warning up for Boulder County in the Fourmile and Hayman Burn areas until 0215, and in Colorado Springs until 0130.

... AT 1210 AM MDT...BOULDER COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT REPORTED THAT

STORM RUNOFF ALONG GOLD RUN OVERTOPPED A SECTION OF ROAD BY A FEW

INCHES....

...

THE COLORADO SPRINGS AIRPORT RECORDED

2.04 INCHES OF RAIN OVER THE PAST HOUR WITH DOPPLER RADAR ESTIMATES

OF BETWEEN 2 AND 3 INCHES ACROSS THE SAME AREA. ...

This makes what? 7 days of storms? Should keep the area green for a short while, as long as the hail doesn't smash it or lightning doesn't burn it down.

The moist monsoonal pattern has been unrelenting this month. 8 straight days with thunderstorms and at least .10" rainfall (and 4 of those days have had over .50") for me. Up to 5.68" over the eight day stretch. And another Flash Flood Watch in effect for today, with heavy rains possible again this evening.

Even DEN, which has mostly been screwed over, got back in the act yesterday.

... 24 hour precipitation record set at Denver International Airport

for Jul 13th...

1.03 inches of liquid precipitation was measured at Denver

International Airport on Wednesday... Jul 13th... establishing a new

daily precipitation record for Denver. The old record was 0.45 set

in 1993.

.70" of that fell in 6 minutes: http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KDEN/2011/7/13/DailyHistory.html

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been on vacation the last month so I'm back in town. Anyway, good chance of storms the next couple of days.

Had a nice t-storm yesterday around 6 pm and picked up another .28", now at 6.32" for the month. DEN once again could barely manage anything from the same storm, just .05". They are at 3.41" for July.

Been kinna quiet here today and yesterday. I kinna thought we'd get hit, but looks like the storms have been hitting to the south of me.

I was on a vacation for two weeks and I wasn't on the internet at all. Fort Collins got 1.7" in July, which is close to normal. Denver got 3.41". What in the heck happened at your backyard?

It wasn't just my backyard. :) Take a look at wunderground stations around the Denver metro area...one near the old Stapleton Airport had over 8" in July, along with another one in SE Denver. DEN was definitely on the low end for the metro area. There were some very heavy thunderstorms last month, and a number of them just missed the airport.

Next couple days look good for storms. Hopefully the areas that have missed out gets them. I've actually gotten enough.....seems like I get hit every afternoon including today. At least the weekend stayed dry.....it was hot, but it was a beauty for outdoor activities.

Your area looks to get nailed pretty good this afternoon/tonight. Some very heavy rainfall possible, and slow-moving storms...it they make it up into Denver metro, we could be dealing with urban flash flooding again.
