I'm hoping for once that the rain misses my area this evening, or at least holds off until after 9...I have a softball double header tonight (making up for a rainout last month).

Looks like a pretty impressive storm out east on I-70, and another one hitting Cheyenne right now.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Denver metro and areas further south and east until 9 pm.

Had a couple thunderstorms that went around me today as I watched on my deck. Other than that, nothing worth talking about regarding this watch, at least here. Seems like the same areas that got the storms the last couple days were getting them today. dry.gif

Yeah, the storms seemed to go right around me yesterday as well. Hopefully we'll get something more substantial over the next few days.

Judging by the lack of comments I take it no one saw the fire northwest of Boulder today? It wasn't big, but it didn't look like a controlled burn. Plus there was a firetruck headed in that direction.

Read about the fire from the Daily Camera. As of last night, about 100 acres were burning, evacuations within a 1.5 mile radius from mile marker 3.7 on LHC.

This week, temps are forecasted to be in the 90's up and down the Front Range and DRY. Thuderstorms will probably be cause for more harm than good - lightning.

Dang. And the house we just moved into has a spanking new (3 year old) A/C unit that is... WOEFULLY underpowered. The attic fan and open windows have been our relief... till tomorrow, I guess. Should have listened to the home inspector...:devilsmiley:

It will be interesting to see if we actually get as warm as predicted. DEN is usually one of the warmest locations in the metro area, and the hottest they have been so far this month is 92 on Sunday. On that day, the temp was 86 at 11 am. Today, they were just 80 at 11. I'm guessing 92-93 today and 95-96 tomorrow, a couple degrees below the NWS forecast. 9news is going with 99 both tomorrow and Thursday, which I think is definitely too high.

That's pretty reasonable.

On my post on June 19, I said that heavy rain will hit the area. Fort Collins only got 0.2" from that storm, and 0.2" to 0.4" of rain fell in eastern Larimer County. 0.81" fell at Estes.

Cloudcover looks like it might be limiting heating potential today. DEN has made it up to 95, but I doubt they get much warmer with the increasing convection moving off the foothills. Also appears to be quite a bit of lightning in the foothills, hopefully no big blazes start today.

KDEN seems to report blowing dust and a wind gust to 72 mph in the past hour. That is probably automated... any way to verify? It is fairly dark around here with radar showing some showers in the area...

Edit: looks real- found my way to the aviation wx page and saw this METAR:

KDEN 292153Z 19021G63KT 6SM DU SCT080 BKN130 BKN200 31/01 A3002 RMK AO2 PK WND 20063/2149 TSB32E47RAB16E25 PRESRR SLP071 P0000 T03060011

Musta been interesting out at DIA!

Wow. We are in the 30% area for wind on the SPC outlook for today.

Yeah, wasn't expecting this at all.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DENVER CO

1115 AM MDT THU JUN 30 2011

...STRONG AND POSSIBLY SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED TO MOVE OVER

THE MOUNTAINS AND URBAN CORRIDOR THIS AFTERNOON...

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHEAST AND NORTH CENTRAL

COLORADO.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

THUNDERSTORMS WITH STRONG AND POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WINDS CAN BE

EXPECTED ACROSS NORTHEAST AND NORTH CENTRAL COLORADO THIS AFTERNOON

INTO EARLY THIS EVENING. NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP IN THE

MOUNTAINS AND SPREAD NORTHEAST ACROSS THE PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON. THE

COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS IN THE UPPER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

ALONG WITH RELATIVELY DRY LOW LEVELS WILL ALLOW STORMS TO PRODUCE

THE STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS UP TO 70 MPH WILL

BE POSSIBLE. THERE IS ALSO POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAINFALL WITH

AMOUNTS UP TO 1 INCH FROM THE STRONGER STORMS MAINLY ALONG AND WEST

OF THE FRONT RANGE MOUNTAINS.

THERE WILL BE HIGH FIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING ACROSS THE

FRONT RANGE FOOTHILLS...PARK COUNTY...AND PALMER DIVIDE AREA WITH

STRONG AND GUSTY SOUTHWEST WINDS...LOW HUMIDITIES AND LIGHTNING WITH

THE STORMS.

THE INCREASE IN STORMS TODAY IS DUE TO AN APPROACHING UPPER LEVEL

DISTURBANCE MOVING FROM EASTERN UTAH INTO WESTERN COLORADO.

...and unfortunately, this was associated with a single engine plane crash with a fatality yesterday afternoon near Watkins- in this morning's Post - as well as a brief closure at DIA. Hopefully this afternoon's storms will be spectacular, wet, and harmless.
