HurricaneJosh
A small line of storms just passed over the capital city, causing lightning, thunder, torrential downpours, and small hail. It didn't last long-- already easing up-- although we're still getting loud thunder. Hail is unusual but not unheard of here-- I've seen it maybe three or four times in all the years I've lived here. Lower-end tornadoes occasionally occur in the Czech Republic, including one that passed near the PRG airport in 2005. I use this site to stay on top of severe weather threats in Europe: http://estofex.org And I use this one for warnings: http://www.meteoalarm.eu/

HurricaneJosh
whoa... weird feeling of Déjà vu It was just interesting enough that I felt like documenting it. Also, now I have a thread for discussing our lame little severe threats.

HurricaneJosh
Did you take any photos Josh? I took a few seconds of video of the hail bouncing off my office window sill-- nothing too dramatic. It was only pea-sized. I might share it later-- but probably the most interesting thing about it is you'll get to see what my office building in Prague 2 looks like-- woo hoo! HurricaneJosh
It's 11 pm and we're having another hailstorm. Two in one day-- with a sunny, calm evening in between. Weird. I'm in a restaurant overlooking one of the two main city squares, Vaclavske Namesti, and of course it's cleared of people. Lots of lightning and thunder. HurricaneJosh
Thanks, Arnold-- that's a nice radar image. Where did you get that? The heavier part has passed through, we're in the greens now.

Pretty cool site...you can loop, zoom, etc. Updates every 15 min and loop auto-updates as new imagery comes in. Not sure how it works on mobile devices tho. Looks like they even have an I-phone app. http://radar.bourky.cz/

Yeah, for Europe, this was a nice little package.
Cory
It's good to see that their radar doesn't suck like so many other non-US weather organizations. Some of them look like they ripped an old radar out of a long-retired airliner, mounted it on a rotating platform, then forgot to pay the electric bill. I used one of those in Korea in the mid 1960's except it was ripped out of a B-29. The AN/APQ-13 tricky little beast to use but thanks to my experience with CPS-9 in MO, I was able to make it perform reasonably well for me.
